Clinto, if you get a chance to wrangle a ride in one, take it!! but be sure that both side windows are open 'cause you'll have a grin so wide you won't be able to close the doors. We went down and I got a ride in a PLS... THEM IS NEAT! Big but amazingly agile with the one, two and fifth axles...
Jason, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.
Bill was looking forward to a ride in it soon and the only way I could make that happen right now is for me to put on a harness with a pintle hook attachment on it and drag the baby HEMTT and riders around by myself. Expression...
Uh, sure Bill. Let me see where I left my harness with the pintle hook attachment. It'll be touring the countryside and giving rides but I'm not sure exactly when. Some weeks the thing really comes together and some weeks I think I'm working on the world's largest lawn ornament.
another day, another piece ot two...
Squeezing in between work and other duties, I've managed to get a few more things done on the baby HEMTT.
Had to remake the driver side walkway 'cause the first one was oil-canning on me. Came out of the press brake propeller shaped and could be twisted into...
RE: baby HEMTT update
Thanks for the vote of confidence Jason. It'll be another fine product of the "Miracle Machine Works" where our motto is; "If it's a good part, it's a Miracle".
RE: baby HEMTT update
Great to hear, Bjorn. Glad to hear our mechanicing paid off.
I've got to see which is cheaper; another sheet of diamond plate or a trip through a normalizing furnace. Keyways are EDMed in the steering box gears but I have to find time to go pick them up. Things got kinda...
baby HEMTT update
One of those weeks where everything kinda falls into place.
Got the intercooler and radiator lashed together and will start cutting tubing for intercooler lines tomorrow. Also fitting engine doghouse side panels and walkway retaining clamps which will in turn, secure the spare...
RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Oops... sorry, that last post was from me.
Cranetruck is sharing my computer while he's in town and I forgot to log him off and me on.
RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Yeah I agree. HEMTTs use a break down jibboom crane with a mil spec "boat winch" and they probably do that because a number of other ideas didn't pan out in the field.
Simplicity is everything in my book; and less moving parts means less to go wrong, get broken, get...
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Coming along in between everything else they're throwing my direction. Walkways are in position and being marked for holddown bolts. Spare tire carrier is on the pass side walkway ready to have bolt holes drilled. After Rizzo pointed out that my spare...
RE: Re: RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Jason, Sounds like a do-able project. The trick is to program out as much of the ideas as you can on paper and get your sources and contacts established. Suppliers, wrecking yards, others infected with OD rash, are a lot more helpful if they think you've done...
RE: Re: RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Hey Jason,
Always up for another toy.
How much, how far down the road, and by then... will I be able to park it at the rest home?
RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Thanks to all for the kind words and interest. It's been an experience(?!?) but one I enjoy. Keeps me off the streets at night and away from being glued to the TV screen.
Bjorn; looking forward to seeing you when you motor through. Call when you get close so I can be...
RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Oh thanks, Rizzo... Now I'll NEVER be able to lift one.
Besides, mine are no doubt lighter due to 15% tread wear and the fact that I'm not using the run-flat insert.
RE: more baby HEMTT pics
Don't know if I'll have the on-board vice or not; will depend on available space. Funny how cramped the space is even on something this big and of course, as soon as I get the vice on it I'll need to find a place for the bottles for the torch set and etc.
Gonna have a...

Me brudder and I wrestled the spare tire carrier up onto the pass side walkway and I'm starting to lay out attachment points. Here's some pictures so far.
Pics of carrier up in place including one one showing my four-legged helper doing some of his best work on a chew toy.
New baby HEMTT pics
After a bit of a lull, I've got some more pics to share.
Details of cargo bed side racks giving a more "cargo bed" look.
Details of engine doghouse progress w/ view of radiator and intercooler in place.
Hello All.
baby HEMTT is still getting a wrench a day. Setting up walkways and spare tire carrier today. When the last of the bigger parts are in/on I'll shoot some more pics for all to enjoy. Side racks for the bed are up and on. Went with a more "cargo" look than the troop seats. Doing some...
Kenny, the seats in ours are pretty comfortable. Early version is spring loaded, later are air bags. They look odd because the seat cushion seems to tilt forward because of the linkage under it. As soon as you sit down it levels out. If it helps figure out the cab room needed; the seat cushion...
baby HEMTT exhaust
Well, after some soul-searching I decided to lose the driver's side fuel tank in favor of extra clearance for my Rube Goldberg steering linkage and a tool box to sit on the driver's side ex-tank brackets.
Getting the fuel lines & transmission cooler lines plumbed up and will...
