    Any Advice from you Legends!

Check out the batteries at your closest Caterpiilar dealer. I found that they have the best built batteries for holding up to vibration and the best warranty I could find.

Adding two-stroke oil for lubricity - this study says NO.

I am not sure what the effect on the injectors are, but it sure does make the clicking sounds under the hood quieter. I think that may be the injector noise. Also, when I use the 2 cycle oil in the diesel, the slow drips from the injector pump stop.

    New guy, "new" 1985 M1009

Welcome to this site. Have you considered changing the oil? I use Mobil One Turbo Diesel 5w-40 it cranks really well in the cold. Of course, cold here is only mid to upper teens and that is becoming more rare.

Is this a symptom of a problem or the possible cause?

My light was doing the same thing, i went into to dash and replaced the number one alt bulb, then the number two was out, along with some of the other dash bulbs. I replaced many of them, but found the problem with the number two alt. and some of the others is actually bad bulb sockets. I left...

Is this a symptom of a problem or the possible cause?

First try tapping the voltmeter while the engine is running, i use the cap end of a small can of WD-40. Second check the # 12 fuse, it is a 10 amp one, this one goes to the voltmeter.

    m1009 occasional scary steering

I have heard that this a problem on this vehicle, so when it was in the body shop I had them install the add-on frame supports before it could be a problem. It seems the designers made it a bit too weak in this spot for off road use. So I know it is a common problem and could put the steering...

    Owner Survey---Fuel Additives

I use 1/2 quart of 2 cycle oil with each half tank of fuel. I use this year round, but will add the Power Service Winterizer in the winter time. I can tell that the there is less noise under the hood.

    Owner Survey---Fuel Additives

Do you use a fuel additive in your CUCV, and if so: what product, how much, how often and what time of the year? Do you notice any results?

Normal For M1009 To Smoke Under Load?

I use one quart of 2-cycle oil per tank in my M1009. Normally I never let it get below a half tank of fuel, so I add one pint of of 2-cycle at fill up. I have never noticed any smoke on idle or at highway speed. An additive lubricant is recommended due to the lubricity of the fuel being removed...

C/K Radiator.. is there a difference???

My original radiator starting leaking in the body shop just sitting there. I bought one that is exactly like OEM, but it was about $450.00. I got it from a local body shop supplier.

    Just bought a M1009

I think by the rattle that there is a pressure type valve in it. That would also explain the huge height of the thing- space for the valve. In any event my oil leaks stopped suddenly and completely when I got a tight seal on it.

    Just bought a M1009

Check your oil filler cap. It must be air tight. It works in conjunction with the CDR valve to keep a small amount of back pressure on the seals to keep them from leaking. There is a metal flange and rubber gasket beneath it. I took the handle part of a plastic grocery bag and wrapped it around...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I think the idea behind the moth balls may have been to deter mice. I am not sure that works, but seems like I have heard that before.

    Just bought a M1009

Isn't the oil pressure sending unit located directly above the oil filter on top of the engine block? Could that be the source of your oil leak?

    New Owner of CUCV

I just replaced my burned out alternator #1 light bulb. It works now but now alternator # 2 does not. I think I arced the voltmeter while checking the lights. I replaced the blown fuse for the # 2 and checked all the other fuses, but still nothing.I used the good bulb from alternator # 1, so I...

    Carc Paint in interior?

My 1986 m1009 appears to be CARC to me. I had the interior of the tailgate painted CARC green and it matches the rest of the interior except for some obvious fading of the old paint. Army tanks and APC's are painted here and I am told the interior and exterior are CARC.
