    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

I will eventually have the leftovers from this restoration which will include the cabs from two other 353 trucks. Don't remember exactly how good they are as they're stored at my brother's place and I haven't looked at them in a while. Neither has a cargo box...one has a commercial flat bed with...

    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

Finished up stripping all the wiring, brake lines, etc off the chassis today. Pretty much ready for sandblasting. I'll probably drag it back outside tomorrow where it may sit for a while. I've got a lowboy trailer that I need to get in the shop that needs all new wiring plus I may add a pair...

    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

The two parts trucks I have are closed cabs too. Fairly early trucks....one is a '42 by the data plate. Too much paint on the data plate to read the other one but it's early enough to have the GMC logo on the front.

    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

Here are a couple of pics showing the yellow paint. The frame is mostly yellow but the cab is also yellow under the OD, even on the inside. There is even a bit of yellow left on the cargo box floor where a winch boom was mounted. It seems the OD didn't bond very well to the yellow as it was...

    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

I found this truck in Colorado Springs years ago when I was finishing up work on an MB and thought I wanted another project. Ended up never having the time or a good place to work until recently. Now that I've got a new shop it's my intention to put it in one corner and work on it as I have...

    Starting CCKW Rebuild......Finally

After having owned this CCKW-353 more than 20 years I finally pulled it into the shop to start a restoration that hopefully won't take another 20 years. Pulled the cargo box and cab and stored them away in another building so that I can begin with the chassis. The engine was pulled a couple of...

    m939 series fuel filter question

If it's anything like mine it's in need of a good cleaning. Take it off and clean out all the rust in the bottom and replace the filter.

M931 Transmission Selector Not working properly

Thanks, I'll experiment a little with the cable adjustment and see if that helps.

M931 Transmission Selector Not working properly

The transmission on my M931 shifts and pulls fine but the only problem is that when you put the selector in any other position besides 1-5 it just goes ahead and shifts like it was in the 1-5 position. If, for example, I put the selector in 1-3 it should limit the trans to shifting no higher...

    M931 Removing Brake Chamber Assembly

This is the split bushing tool I made to remove the stuck brake actuator. It clamps around the tube and has flats cut on the sides for a 2" wrench to turn it loose. The spanner teeth on the end of the tool were used to tighten the new collet nut. No need to clamp the halves together to...

    M931 Removing Brake Chamber Assembly

I ended up making a split bushing type tool to clamp over the tube on the brake actuator. I cut wrench flats on the tool for a 2" wrench and it loosened it right up. On one end of my tool I cut teeth to engage the lock nut when tightening down the new part. Didn't have time just now to post a...

    M931 Removing Brake Chamber Assembly

Thanks for the info....should be helpful.

    M931 Removing Brake Chamber Assembly

The spring brake diaphragm is leaking pretty good and the plate that the safety bolt hooks into has a piece broken out so it's kind of risky to take it apart and repair. I just bought the whole assembly NOS rather than risk it taking my head off.

    M931 Removing Brake Chamber Assembly

I'm trying to remove one of the rear brake chamber assemblies from my M931 and I'm having difficulty getting it loose. I tried using a punch to loosen the lock nut (#10 in the diagram) without success. There's not much room to work on the inside of the brake backing plate. Before I get too...

    M931 Air Brakes (again)

Success! Replaced the tractor protection valve (bad spool seal) & the Pressure protection valve (rusted & broken springs) and now everything works like it should. The main pressure holds around 125/130, the trailer brake button holds in almost instantly, the hand brake operates the trailer...

    M931 Fuel prime problem

Using the 2nd tank for off-road fuel sounds like a decent idea.....as long as you don't run into an overzealous DOT officer that tries to accuse you of running dyed fuel on the road.

    M931 Air Brakes (again)

That might explain the high pressure..... Removed the tractor protection valve.....didn't look too bad until I noticed the flat seal on the spool was falling apart. It probably isn't the reason I'm not getting pressure to the trailer emergency line as the it's just an open pass through port...

    M931 Air Brakes (again)

Took PPV valve apart in attempt to clean it....glass beaded the parts, but springs were very rusty. Small spring broken in a couple of places. Couldn't get it to relieve pressure so I'll be replacing it. With it stuck it might explain why the windshield washer air motor in the reservoir has...

    M931 Air Brakes (again)

Thanks, Not sure I understand the circuit exactly but will pull the PPV and see if it's sticking. $20 is cheap enough even if it's not bad. I'm used to buying Ag tractor parts and truck parts are waaaay cheaper. Something like that from Case/IH or John Deere would probably cost $200.
