I had to fact check that for myself. After reading several accounts posted online, I do agree. It seems to be 2-3 times worse. Very poor design.

Remove and replace. It's covered in the TM. And, it is far, far easier than the one I did one my crappy 94 Geo Metro beater car yesterday - that took four hours and involved removing the dash.
