I’m no diesel mechanic, but could it be that you have a vacuum leak in the intake that is sucking in too much air under decel? I would think that could cause a knocking and since you removed the intake it could have messed up a gasket putting it back on?

Thanks for the feedback! I see it probably has the original engine but a yellow stripe on the glow plug temp sensor so I assume it has been upgraded at least once. I also see some triangular plates on the b pillar which indicate some retrofit? I’ll keep an eye out for a new eecc if needed...
