To answer these questions, it is unlikely that you will find a unit that has not been reset at least once regardless if a tag is present, they are out there, mostly ones that spent their entire lives in storage (prepositioned resupply for a war in Europe, etc.) However the MEP-002a and...
Last week while using the genset (MEP 002a) it just shut down after running a few hours. It started back up and it ran fine for about 3 more hours. A couple days latter the same thing happened but twice this time. The Genset is now doing this more frequently to the point it will only run a a...
Ditto - The very first MEP 002A I picked up also had the red cable connected to the chassis and the black cable to the starter. I wonder if somebody did this to be "cute" or what. I hooked the red cable to battery + and black cable to battery -. After rebuilding 8 MEP generators I know...
I have a pair of Exide Classic group 51R's on my MEP-002a which has a fairly new (2008?) Southern Automotive built type 1 starter and they don't have many cranks in them before draining down, I suspect it would be better if I had a type 2 gear reduction starter instead. I swapped the older type...
I am not so sure the military "upgraded" so much as offered both, I have a MEP-002a that came from GL with a Type 1 starter built by Southern Automotive it is new enough still look almost brand new and has a web site URL printed on the label, I am guessing from its 2008 major service (stenciled...
Can you post photos, something does not sound right here.

p.s. Could this be some 3rd party non original starter on the MEP-002a, also is it a type 1 or type 2 starter?
It WORKS. The circlip was fashioned from 1/16" ER70S2 weld filler that was bent, cut and finished to diameter, then quenched to near spring temper ( at 0.35% carbon, it barely quenches to knife hard). The washer was fabbed from 1030 carbon steel.
Only needed utility power but could have used...
I just bought a MEP 002A got it home and put new batteries in and it ran fine. The next day I went to start and nothing. Fuel pump comes on, Fuel valve opens but no starter. I can jump the solenoid and get it to turn over but again it wont start. I try a little starter fluid and it will begin to...
Someone REALLY SHOULD sticky this.
This is an amazingly easy fix to the Ch42 glow plug shortage problem.
Thank you for posting this Cuad4u. Really. I would even consider doing this before i were to think of spending the asking prices that the 24v glow plugs are going for right now. My heart...
Sometimes after I speak or post, a better idea comes to mind. If 24V glow plugs become extinct and / or cost prohibitive and if we have to use 12V glow plugs in our 002A and 003A generators, this may be the simplest and best way to go.
1. Install a relay with a 24VDC coil and heavy duty...
I posted this same idea else where. I think the simplest solution, if 24V glow plugs become extinct and we have to start using 12V glow plugs, is this. First - install a heavy gauge wire (gauge will depend on current draw) to the + terminal of the "bottom" battery. This is the battery whose -...
All that stuff may not be needed to get a good running standby MEP-002a, I bought one off GL a couple of years ago for about $450, it is an ugly duckling with brushed on cammo CARC, but from a mechanical point of view was in great shape. It appears it was a non-runner fresh from a major...
Jerry,
I sold a 002 to a neighbor and it has a hard time starting his 3 ton heat pump. He has an all electric house and has to run basics only if he wants the heat pump or ac. Maybe candidate for a hard start kit. To me, the generator is only for basics during a power outage. I am...
Like others have said, tan tends to mean "sand", unfortunately green can mean sand too, my MEP-002a is green, and the control box and cooling fins were full of sand when I bought it.
As the other's have said GL is a dice roll, and they take no responsibility for anything, they don't even promise that the photos are of the unit in the listing, although they try to not get them mixed up, it does happen, it is not uncommon to find a wrong picture mixed in, like a plain green...
Expect somewhere around .5 gph at 3KW load, it runs at 3600 rpms, so consumes about the same amount of fuel per hour (or maybe just a bit less) than a 5KW MEP-002a which runs at 1800. You can probably safely draw 3.5KW or so from the Yanmar L70 powered MEP-016D which will be engine limited, the...
I was just wondering does the Style 1 Starter found on some MEP-002a and MEP-003a generators have any advantage over the Style 2 starters? I know the Style 2 draw less amps when starting.

I was looking around online last night, just seeing what parts or whole units are available and I came across an auto start kit that I haven't seen before. I'm not sure if the forum rules allow a link to be posted, but just search "MEP remote starter kit" on a popular auction website.
This...
I am assuming you have done your research, are handy around engines, know that almost all of these are going to need some work if bought at auction, etc. So I am going to get right to the point on auction sites in no particular order:
1, Ebay, steady supply, lots of semi-professional...
Ike,
I looked at a few of those connectors online, some with cables connected & others without. Would you be able to post a few photos of the actual configuration you're using? I've got a couple MEP-016Ds & would like to set up a way to use the onboard starter, vice pull-start.
Thanks,
Kevin
