A lot of "truck won't start" stories on here begin with "I installed a keyed switch"
It's probably the number one modification that causes issues.
Definitely remove it and go back to the stock switch. The keyed ones won't hold up to the amps being put through it.

Yes, there is a difference between the two.
The M998A2 has heavier suspension and drivetrain parts.
M998 and M998A1 drivetrain uses either 7.7k or 10.3k rated halfshafts. The M998A2 12k halfshafts use a different size spline end going into the hubs.

pretty much every HMMWV ends up going through a reset/rebuild at some point.
They have a large amount of money to spend bringing the truck back to reset condition, and even if it doesn't need anything they still do all of the major wear items like engine and transmission.

all modern brake systems are split,so that if something does happen you don't lose all braking power.
