M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

I'm going to surprise some folks and NOT vote for a Unimog (sorry kyle LOL). I have two daughters who are explorers at heart, and I also spent a lot of time around the oilfield where females were trying to fit in. It's a tough world out there for them. As pointed out in a very perceptive...

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

Good way to blow up a fuet tank. Please be careful.

TONGUE INSPECTION ! EVERYBODY check 'em before they FAIL ! ! !

Scary situation. What would you do if your trailer got left behind in one lane of the highway? Try to retrieve it? Get behind it with warning triangles? Back up on shoulder then come up behind trailer to shove it off highway? Wish for LEO to show up or wish for LEO to not show up LOL. In...

    Alternator Overcharging maybe?

Have you checked your batteries? A high resistance cell or cells will not load the regulator until voltage rises. The alternator is able to put out over 15v so it's probably good, IMHO. You swapped regulators so that might rule out regulators. [Edit] took out my reference to 24v, duh] Bob

    Running backwards?

That might have been my post on Benzworld. Had that happen just as described above, engine bumped backwards while using the front loader on a 406. The engine sounds just fine and at a low idle it takes a few seconds to notice the exhaust out the intake. In the meantime it is a shock when...

Grease or gear oil for a 20ton tag trailer

Lose a seal with oil on a long trip and you can have a bearing failure. Lose a seal with grease and nothing happens. You might investigate grease with NLGI 0 rating. This grease is non-flowing unless it is mechanically stirred. With stirring, as in bearings, it is a fluid, so it distributes...

    "Connection reset while loading"

Hi Patracy, I appreciate your ongoing help on this issue. Update: I have full and error free access from my PC to Steel Soldiers right now, and for last couple of days. Might have been working longer but I didn't check. I have made no changes to my PC but have no idea what Verizon, my ISP...

Another M105 trailer modification- add Unimog Radio Box

That is the original Unimog "buddy bar" for towing. It links the Ringfeder pintle hitch of the towing vehicle to the standard tow-bar receptacle on the towed vehicle. The use as a spreader is a bonus! It's as if it were made for the job. One day I'll swedge/swage up some cables to replace...

Another M105 trailer modification- add Unimog Radio Box

I'd say the chances are very good :-) I still have to renovate and install the furniture into the box, including the front radio table, and left rear side table. Still on the lookout for a suitable mast for this box, either a telescoping triangular tower (40 ft range) or pneumatic type as used...

Another M105 trailer modification- add Unimog Radio Box

The 1985 Zepellin-built radio box (from a 404 Unimog) went onto the modified M-105 trailer frame yesterday: The old but rejuvenated Pitman Polecat hydraulic crane (mounted on a 406 Unimog) handled the box well. The black "yard truck" is a 404 Unimog being brought back to life after sitting...

Another M105 trailer modification- add Unimog Radio Box

The crane is fully mobile. I don't find a picture showing it (to follow) but the boom rotates around and lowers on the guide on the ROPS, the stabilizers tuck up, and it's narrow enough to drive on highway. With the weight up high I usually limit my speed to 35 mph or so. Bob

    Adding a winch

Thanks, having ability to back off on a load is very handy, and sometimes mandatory. Many PTO winches do not have reverse.

    Adding a winch

Good thread! Excuse my ignorance but two questions: 1 does the deuce PTO winch power out? Does it have a gearbox with reverse? 2) Does the M35A3 hydraulic winch power out? Power out is a great way to birdcage cable.

    Fixing Out of round Tires

The disk has chunks of carbide maybe 1/16" height. Search for "tire cutting" disks. Btw each of the 14.5 x20 Michelin XLs has 3500 lbs load on them and I run 35 psi. Lots of miles on highway, over 10k km a year, usually at 55 to 60 mph but up to 70 if needed.

    Fixing Out of round Tires

Here are some shots of truing a tire and re-grooving it. All done by hand, a slow process, but got another 10k km out of the tires. Truing and regrooving was followed by putting 16 oz of balancing beads in each tire. They ran like new ones. The tires were only regrooved by 1/4 inch at a time...

    Fixing Out of round Tires

There's one important factor you'all are leaving out: load on the truck. The military pressure recommendations are for maximum payload (the safe way to set spec) and the pressure stamped on the tire is at rated max payload. That does not mean you have to run those pressures. Running max...

    503 error

FYI, My home computer has been mostly unusable on SS (and only SS) for several months. Same computer works fine on the remainder of the web. An SS page will sometimes load if I refresh it ad nauseum, sometimes 8 to 10 times. Sometimes (rarely) pages load first time. Sent in IP address as...

Condensation and milkshake in my trucks valve cover

How is your thermostat? That milky sludge could indicate the engine is running cold all the time. Does your temp gauge show a good stable operating temperature? IIf the thermostat is working but only holding a low temperature, say 160 deg, I'd go with a higher temp thermostat. Does the...

    WWII Antenna "Shape"

Sure looks like an antenna. The droop was probably just for convenience as already stated. If this structure were a rack for holding anything, there would be more cross members and it would be loaded. The fact that it is relatively clear (except for maybe a tarp on one end) indicates a PLAN...
