Bottle jacks are fine on a good surface, but imagine trying to use one in mud or water. For some reason they lose their appeal when you have to hold your breath to place them under the axle. At times like that the Hi-Lift is a wonderful option.
As for safety, that's been touched on already...
You are smart to try to find an unmolested 404. Too many have been converted to 'trail' trucks, and ruined, IMHO.
Probably the best place to watch for a Unimog is on the Unimog Exchange:
Unimog® Exchange
There are often 404s on the Exchange in original condition. A good buddy bought a...
For the 24 to 12 converter, IMHO, if you are going to use it a lot, get a good one. Here are a couple of USA made converters: Newmar, and Wilmore. Both of these are used heavily in construction equipment, fire vehicles, airport equipment, trains, and telephone equipment (yeah they even have a...
Hi Eric,
To use your stock mount (what type?), if you can find any kind of base insulator that fits your mount (AB-15 type, or many other bases like it), then add a short antenna. Since you only need a short radiating element, I think I'd use a piece of thin 1" tubing, adapted to clamp to the...
Military? Non Mil? Fixed mount? OD?
Most simple antenna would be a little whippy whip about 2 ft long on a mag mount.
If you transmit there on the aircraft band then tune the antenna, otherwise receive will do just fine without tuning.

I have tried balancing beads in 14.5 Michelin XL's on 20 x 11 rims. Beads didn't solve the bounce/balance problem. Took the tires to a truck tire store and had them spin/dynamically balanced with weights. No further problems. None of the tires needed over 8 ounces to balance, one needed...
Are you thinking about the BAMA site? (Boat Anchor Manual Archive) It's apparently down right now but the mirror site is up:

Hi Mike, I used to be on Boatanchors all the time but lost track. Is there no active forum or email list now? Tnx.

You have a big project to add all that hydraulic stuff to any truck. One question was more straightforward, how to transfer hydraulics from one dual circuit to another.
Surplus Center - 1/2" NPT 20 GPM DOUBLE SELECTOR VALVE
This is a great place to shop for hydraulics. Note that this...
No, IMHO. I can tell you from work experience that painting antennas for much higher frequencies will cause no trouble (Ku Band). Just don't use metallic/metal-bearing paint, which you indicated you were not.
He didn't screw up and get stuck. He purposely tested the limits of traction and gravity. :-) When we go out there we expect to push some limits.
Where's the Texas pride [thumbzup]
You are certainly right about that! Here's a picture of one of my 406 Unimogs set up with a winch on the back (a big Braden with hydraulic power, 150 ft of 9/16" cable). This is a much more stable setup with the big weight hanging low in the rear. We had just completed extracting a Land Rover...
Jim Williams is selling some on Ebay, too, item 310323230169. Advert says WD-1 and mentions TA-312.
Jim's seller name is j5w23 and from my dealings with him you can't go wrong.

I have towed my '52 M-38 cross country several times. Unlock the lockouts on the front, and drop the rear driveshaft. Same tranny since 1969 so the technique must work ok.
It tended to lock full left or full right so the steering wheel was 'bungeed' to center to allow a little give but not...
Good info, Thanks!
Looks like I need to make a special cable because my setup does not have the AM-2060, MT-1029, or either of those radios LOL. But the MK-456 retrans kit looks interesting.
The mount in use here is the MT-3823/GRC, and has no extra connectors so no direct connection to the...
Usual radio practice is to avoid having a transmitter hooked directly into the input of a receiver, for obvious reasons. Other than the damage that can occur from overload, the receiver cannot receive anything while the transmitter is on, so nothing is gained by not using half duplex.
In cases...
Apparently there is no such cable.
Another related question: Any knowledge of the VIC-1 being used with any newer radio with the new series (U-229 type) plugs?
thanks
Bob
Is there a cable to connect the VIC-1 intercom to a PRC-77 or other radios with 'new series' U-228 type connectors?
I'd like to connect the VIC-1 in my Unimog radio truck to a PRC-174 HF radio and to a PRC-77.
Maybe I'll have to fabricate a cable but would prefer an original, if ever made...
