Welcome Don! I'm a hundred and fifty miles or so to your east. Don't tell your wife but there's no cure.
We have a group of Mil Veh people in the Knoxville area, loosely organized as the Knoxville Military Vehicle Club. We occasionally come over in your direction for camping trips, such as...
Tom,
I have an S-250 that at one time was a ham shack and was strapped to a small homemade trailer. The trailer probably weighed 1000 lbs, and the S-250 is usually less than that with radios.
The 2000 lb package pulled well with a Jeep Cherokee (6 cyl 4L inline engine and wimpy auto...
Unless you want to stick to the roads (big roads) a vehicle can get unmanageably big, IMHO.
We camped near Ecoroamer in Moab, UT, during the spring and got to compare trucks. Picture shows the size, and the Mog is a U-1300L, one of the larger ones.
If the vehicle gets so limited by large...
NDT's are terrible on ice. Best if you can air way down to get at least a little of the H's edges on the pavement.
Sometimes 4wd is not advised on ice. If there is any chance of sliding sideways, or if a turn is in progress, the tires will hold better if not driven. Locking differentials...
You can get an idea if the capacitors are good by using an analog VOM to test them.
Set the VOM (volt-ohm-meter) to a fairly high resistance scale, like x100, and connect across the capacitor. Make normal positive to positive connection first. You should see a kick of the VOM then the needle...
Those blue connectors are Anderson Powerpole connectors (as an aid for searching purposes).
I use 250 amp sets for welding cable configuration. Price was about 10 bucks each when I was shopping a few years ago...much less than NATO cables, especially if you have the wire available.
Many Ham...

Is that what you need?
One method of getting 115 volt AC from a vehicle is to scrounge around for a UPS (Uninterruptable power supply)with dead batteries (cheap). Of course find one that has the voltage you need. These are available in many Wattages. I have a 2400 W and a 3600 W, if I remember correctly. One is...
Dual alternators sound like an awful lot of work! Isn't that a typical CUCV setup (that's always broken :-))
As many pointed out, most converters put out higher than 12v. "12v", and "24v" are just nominal voltages and never meant to be exact. My converters are adjusted to 13.8 v, a good...
Oh the shame, the shame  All those antennas going to waste without radios!
At the last Georgia SS Rally there was ONE functional radio on the trail rides with all those trucks, and that one was a hand carried PRC-77.
To a ham op that's like building all your military vehicles to look...
The 24 v alternator and regulator would react poorly to the connection of a 12 v battery, even through an isolator. Shortly thereafter the battery would complain too.
One way to do what you want is to keep the 24 v system just as is but add the 12 v battery as you said. Then use a 24v to 12v...

to see one way to mid-mount a winch and use it to the front or the back. This is my 1957 404 Unimog. The pictures were from several years span as the truck evolved. This setup has done a lot of work (as...
