    M1009 Whip Antenna Question

No harm in trying it since you are not going to transmit through it. Set the matching network switch to the highest band (it tunes up to 88 MHz, the bottom of the FM band!) and it might work great. Technically, your FM radio prefers a high impedance antenna and the 1729 is low (52 Ohm +/-) but...

    M1009 Whip Antenna Question

Hi, Do you intend to transmit on the military antenna also? If so, it'd be ill-advised to put the FM (good-time radio) antenna so close. If you don't intend to transmit, sure you can use the mil antenna. Depending on the type, you can even hook the FM cable to the antenna. Most FM antennas...

    Aircraft Radio

I'm no expert either but the last letter means a lot to collectors. What's the last letter on the p/n, after the 348? More important is the condition. Many of these receivers were converted to run on an AC power supply instead of the original dynamotor. That involved rewiring the filaments...

    Strange looking critter

Warning, don't ever buy one of these SEE's. Piece of junk Unimogs... Break down if you look at them, can't get parts, and even require a set of them funny mm wrenches. Might have to read a MANUAL, too. If you have been foolish enough to bid and win, don't despair, call me. Tennmogger

Pics Highlands Ranch (Denver) 4th Parade

Did you guys spot a sand/brown 1957 Unimog 404 flatbed in the parage? My son-in-law was driving it.:-D Bob

HELP got sparks coming out of my tailpipe!?!?!?!

IMHO just carbon/soot being blown out. Also sounds like it 'slobbered' a little, causing the fuel smell. Being night allows you to see the burning soot better. If that engine idled for 4 hours no wonder it is getting sooted up. It just needs a good run at load :-D What idle speed do you...

    North to Alaska

Ditto the "take fuel". Wife and I went up last fall and found Diesel cost as much as $7.80 per gallon. At that price the purchase of gerry cans to take along could be almost free. Of course we were making the trip at the worst possible time, pricewise, but we went when we could and have not...

    tire mileage (lifespan)

For a set of 14.5 x 20 Michelin XL's on a Unimog U1300L (weight 14k, single rear wheels): measured wear of 5/16" in 35,000 km (21k miles) driven between Feb 2008 and present. That wore them to 'zero' center tread depth. The "regroovable" tires have now been regrooved by 1/4", leaving about...

Question on Michelin XL's (SIDEWALL WAVY)

There's a huge gap between 1) a "friend that has a cage and works on truck tires", who somehow does not know that every Michelin XL has wavy sidewalls, and 2) the "number one tire and alignment contractor for STOP&SHOP trucking for over 10 consecutive years". Guess that's why we have a forum...

Question on Michelin XL's (SIDEWALL WAVY)

Yeah, he hasn't a clue. I've found that about 40 psi is about right for good ride and best tire tread wear on my U-1300. (probably near equivalent to an M35... 14,000 lbs on 4 wheels, 14.5 x 20 Mich XL's). I have had them down to 15 psi for rough or soft stuff and never a debead. FWIW...

    Running winch in reverse?

Running a winch (worm gear type) backwards also puts the force on the worm gear in the opposite direction. Most winches are made with the force 'inward' on the worm gear. The bearings in the 'out' direction are probably not as robust, and may not have any axial strength at all! Bottom line...

S-250 Shelter / Ham Shack Conversion

Yeah, but don't you just love the music from a mechanical rtty machine ! :-P I operated higher speed cw with an ART-13 with all relays still operational. It felt like it'd bounce off the table. It really is nice to see someone keeping the older stuff going. Bob

S-250 Shelter / Ham Shack Conversion

Really nice looking S-250 setup! That's quite a nice collection of green radios. Too bad the shelter had that nasty rollover accident while you were taking the pictures  I had great plans for my S-250 as a ham shack on wheels but the 404S Unimog radio truck worked out well instead...

New 15.5x20 Michelins Beating The Crap Out of Me!

MilitaryRestoration, I'm interested in "why they do that". I run 14.5 x 20 Michelin XL's on my U1300 Unimog (14,000 lbs as in daily use) and run 45 psi. These tires were military surplus and were not very round. After trying from 20 oz to 34 oz of Dynabeads in them and partially solving the...

    New Unimog Owner Here

Nice truck! Congrats on the acquisition. The 404 Unimog is a functional, reliable, and simple truck. Making major changes to it is your choice but you might find that after your restoration work it will perform adequately for your needs. There's much to be said for it's original MB...

    F-head Carter YF/YS carb gasket part #?

Maybe the previous owner had problems with carb heating. Adding those extra gaskets isolates the carb from the manifold. Think I'd consider one of the Bakelite spacers to space it, but I have no idea if that was standard on an M38A1. My old ex M-38 has an F-head in it and uses a spacer. Bob

    Inverter advice

If you need a 24v to 12 v converter, I highly recommend the Wilmore brand. US made, great quality. Used by fire departments, airports, railroads, emergency vehicles, etc. I use their models 1640 and 1416 (versions up to 35 Amps or higher). Running 12 v radios and equipment directly off the...

    Bostrom Viking T-Bar Spring Seats

I have that model in a Unimog and like it. The 404 Unimog (ex French Army NATO-Germany) requires a low seat so the Bostrom was perfect. It's much more comfortable than the original non-suspension seat. But, having the room for an air suspension seat, I'm with the other guys, an air seat is...

Tsk, tsk, gotta finish that bathroom first Chris LOL

Wire rope right lay vs left lay

One compromise setup that I use on the Unimogs is a sliding hook on the cable, but with a swedged end on the cable for shackle attachment for most uses (I don't much like hooks). The sliding hook is wide enough, and with a radius, that the cable does not get damaged and is handy for hooking to...
