According to a tire size-speed calculator I looked up, going from a 9.00R20 (40" diameter) to a 395/85R20 (46" diameter) adds 15% to whatever the truck's speedometer is showing. So if you have an M35 (not A3) that goes from the stock tires to the 395s you're doing about 58 mph when your...
Totally agree - I won't do more than 50 with mine even with dual-circuit brakes. I just take my time in the truck - I want people to see my truck and not a big green blur  That's what my daily drivers are for!
I don't think even the FMTV is designed to go much faster than 55 - maybe the...
I just used the same caution with my GM van. People on the Facebook group were swearing by AC Delco, whereas others were saying that the OEM stuff didn't matter anymore as it was just the same quality as anything. In my case it was a distributor cap, which I ended up buying from a "Daily...
Is there a line torque wrench? Or is it more of a feel thing? When I've done any brake lines I've just tightened them as far as I can with a line wrench.
LMTV cover? Those are taller and allow more comfort working in the back while standing. I think some others here have lengthened the bow legs to accommodate the LMTV cover.
I need to put some patches in my cover too. I only do about 45-50 going down the road but would hate to wreck the...
A barn is on my list for the next house!
I have to get the cab top off my truck and address some windshield frame rust. It looks like surface rust right now, but don't want it to get worse!
Seems it didn't turn to goo after all! Seems like the filters to it were plugged though, so little flow maybe it wouldn't actuate anything. Great to see this survivor working :driver:
The red coolant works better with a diesel engine's vibrations, which are stronger than gas-powered motors - something about bubbles and cavitation with the water pump I think.
You mentioned it got up to 3rd gear - do you have 4th and reverse? The transmission should shift to 4th between 30...
At a minimum I suggest getting newer (younger) surplus tires to put on the steering axle. The rear ones aren't as likely to cause major control issues should one blow up.
Are you sure the parking light switch isn't on? I discovered what it did the other day 💩
(I don't park my truck anywhere much and leave it running, or any of my daily drivers for that matter.)
On second thought, that might not control the brake light bulbs.
A quick search showed me that new Michelin XZL 395s cost about $2000 each. New Continental 365/80R20 tires are $800-$900 each IIRC.
Be careful buying surplus tires. If a shop thinks there's too much sidewall cracking, they may not pass a vehicle safety inspection, historical tags or not.
I haven't had to buy any Cat parts (hope I won't have to for awhile!) but I wouldn't expect it to be any different from buying parts from a John Deere or Chrysler dealer. IIRC I used their online parts catalog to look up engine filters for price comparisons (hint: 3rd party sellers were less...
I'd say the LMTV from the mid 1990s would be an alternative from what I've read. I don't believe those trucks have electronic diesels, but the Cat 3116 like the M35A3. I think they all have electronic transmissions though.
If I got a 5-ton I'd want an M939 truck, with the M809 or M39A1 coming...
What motor is in the truck? Is it some kind of gasser or the multifuel diesel? I'm wondering if the truck had another engine put in it along with the radiator. I know some older gasser deuces have been repowered with 350 Chevy V8s.
