WW2 jeeps were only expected to last 60 days in combat, therefore they used less steel in their engine blocks and heads I believe. Makes me wonder if there's a chart somewhere 🤔
EDITED to add more context to the jeep's life expectancy.
You can downshift the AT1545 too. The Allison manual says it's an acceptable way to engine-brake the truck going from Drive to 3rd since 3rd locks up at the torque converter. I downshift at 30 mph when slowing to stop or make a turn at an intersection.
Maybe it had to do with the contract proposals and the DoD was none the wiser 🤷♂️
The M35A3 is the same way - it doesn't have the same Cat 3116 as the FMTV which can do well over 200 HP compared to the A3's 170. It's my understanding that it's all the same block like the two multifuel...
I can't help but think that the problem has to do with half the transmissions guts being made of fibrous clutch bands 🤔 I think of them like brake shoes.
Lots of grass on that drivetrain, like they've been sitting so long the lawn started growing on top of them
No wonder you had a such a hard time getting to stuff in that engine compartment - there's barely any room left! I suppose that's what happens when you re-use sheet metal from...
I always thought the 6x6 10-tons were cool - looking forward to seeing where this project goes!
Are they as wide as bridge trucks? That doesn't look very over-width looking at the lowboy 🤔
24.7V is just the two batteries - I don't think you're charging at all. I suspect either alternator or voltage regulator, especially if you're not getting a response from the voltage regulator adjustment screw. Before pulling the alternator check for proper belt tension. If that's good, check...
@msgjd thank you for sharing that experience. I think it reinforces the reason why the 2 1/2-ton truck needed to be kept on-hand. I remember reading a document about FMTV procurement where Congress questioned the need to keep the 2 1/2-ton truck (M35A3/LMTV) when the 5-ton (MTV/M939) could do...
There was an M54A2 that I considered buying when I was looking for a truck. It was owned by fire department and used as a brush truck, with a brush guard going from the bumper to the grill and a headache rack. The only problem was that it was six hours away from me and I wasn't willing to...
I still run 15W-40 and probably will until it needs a rebuild. The shifts in my truck are pretty obvious, mostly sound-wise. I don't think it shifts much rougher than my 2012 Chrysler 200 with the motor oil in it :p
When I first got the truck I thought it had a 6-speed automatic. That's when...
It'll sound like it's going into a 6th gear. Also check the tach against the speedometer - they should be moving at the same time when the torque converter is locked up. When there's no lock-up the tach needle will move up and down before the speedometer does because of the fluid coupling lag...
