I don't believe this has been posted before. I was searching around my troubleshooting folder and I have a couple of images from the Army PM Magazine (the cartoon tips magazine) articles for the LMTV so I thought why not try to see if they are online and if they have an index for FMTVs... Yes...
dalej,
That is a cool idea! I have an RV ladder I was thinking of trying to fit into one of the now vacant lifting holes.... Maybe start a thread for "storage ideas and modifications."
That little tray you found is pretty slick! All I got with mine is three empty MRE wrappers and two mice nests...
Justin and Rounders Logistics - Fantastic Experience!
Just completed the transport of my 97' LMTV M1078 from Ft. Carson, CO to St. Louis, MO. Justin was great helping me get the truck home and took the time to understand my requirements with short notice to get transportation arranged. He...
I have seen a couple of LMTVs for sale online that did the 2 non-military battery conversion and those owners reported no issues with starting/charging. Full write-ups seem few and far between for LMTV mods as of late so hopefully we will start seeing more how-to in that department. Wiring...
OK, understood. I had to use a flashlight and a woman's compact mirror (stupid thing has saved me more time and money over the years than I care to admit) to check and fill the rear batteries last night. As I suspected, the front two batteries were good back two were both dry. It was a real pain...
Dalej, that's funny that's what I want to do to the truck. Not exactly a camper but an adventure rig. Have lots of spare gear from my Jeep and commando camper I built. Fresh water and water pump are on the menu.
Figured out why truck wouldn't start on its own off the transport truck. Both back batteries had zero water in any cell. Went through an entire gallon of distilled water so assuming they are toast... stuck them on the Genus charger for laughs to see if it can work a miracle.
I know the LMTV weighs in just a tad under 18,000 pounds so what's a few hundred off the top but I was thinking dead weight is dead weight...
Removed the front lifting eyes behind the cab they weigh 60 pounds each.
Removed the spreader bars just in front of rear wheels they weigh 80-83 pounds...
Pickup was at Ft. Carson, CO. Glen, the GovPlanet site rep is a great guy to deal with. Pickup days as of this writing are Mon-Wed at Carson. Dropoff was my house outside St Louis, MO. 800 miles. Picked up on Monday and delivered at noon on Tuesday.
I went with Justin from Rounders Logistics (a...
Thank you Bikeman now I understand what Suprman was explaining.
Is there a certain sequence to follow when disconnecting the batteries? Going to pull them all and clean up.
Pics shortly. There was no diagram on inside of battery cover but I traced terminals to see how it's wired. All 4 batteries read 12v on multimeter directly on each batteries terminals. The way I understand it you get the 24 volts by connecting to battery A positive and battery B negative wired...
Ok good to go off the truck and parked in the workshop. Batteries look like crap lots of corrosion. A multimeter is your best friend. Three batteries at 12.6v one at 7.5v. Since voltage at each battery is 12v not 24 I hooked up a fully charged rv deep cycle 12v battery to the dead one and the...
Ok negative from battery 1 to positive on battery 2. Use positive from battery 1 and negative from battery 2 to connect jumper cables to truck batteries?
Ok I do have two deep cycle batteries I can wire in series available. Charging one right now and the other is fully charged. Pulling them both now. Quick lesson on series wiring. Both cables on the two jump batteries positive to neg? Will do a search as well. Thanks and will keep updated.
SUCCESS: LMTV arriving, needed a jump
Finally getting the LMTV delivered today at noon. The transport driver indicated the truck is going to need a jump to fire it up. I know the batteries are wired in series/parallel, and I have a 7.5amp 24 volt charger but I don't think it will give it enough...
My understanding is that the CAT 3116 LMTVs don't have glow plugs like most modern diesel engines and the newer series of LMTV which is why they have an ether injector and are difficult to start in cold weather. Shoot, even my Kubota diesel zero-turn mower has glow plugs but I digress...
I am...
Right, that was that big "my front hubs burned up" during a recovery thread everyone points to as a caution/danger. Didn't check the fluid in the front hubs and they had been drained so they quickly were eaten up and seized...
