Yup, got the Self-Recovery Winch, multiple snatch blocks and straps. Prior to getting the truck stuck, I skidded a 40' CONEX (shipping container) across the yard using the winch and snatch blocks. Just a few weeks ago I was way up in the Colorado mountains skidding logs uphill and loading them...
Yup, there's those that have stuck an LMTV, and those that haven't yet. I've stuck mine. Maryland got a ton of rain early this year. Goliath (my M1081) was in the back of the yard, I wanted to drive it that day. Bad idea. The ground was so soggy that Goliath barely motivated out of its parking...
Looking for help or just advice? I lived in Maryland until May of this year, but am now in Colorado, had my M1081 shipped from Maryland to Colorado, having a blast with it here.
Tree recovery effort
Goliath (M1081 w/SRW) and I trekked into the Eastern Range of Colorado to a coworker's mountain retreat. He downed three trees and cut them into 12' sections. Using the SRW, we skidded them a hundred feet up the hillside to the truck and loaded them using the davit crane...
I used Kessler Body and Equipment in Southern Maryland. Very Southern Maryland. As in, if you drive a mile east you hit the Chesapeake Bay, two miles west the Potomac River, five miles south you hit Point Lookout and can see Virginia from there. About two hours south of DC, but only 10 minutes...
I purchased my M1081 last year already titled in Maryland but not registered in the state. I transferred the title into my name with no problems, took the truck to a local truck inspection station for the state inspection, fixed a few things, re-inspected successfully, then registered as a...
Mine had about 3" toe in, to go with improperly shimmed king pins on the axles, and a damaged/worn steering box overstressed by the king pins binding. Now drives like a dream! Thanks Suprman for the steering box!
0 to 1/8" toe-in (0 to slightly pigeon-toed). Army has a tool for the job but I measured from inside of each tire at 23" up from ground, front and rear. I marked the spot on the inside of each tire then measured using an old carpenter's rule, then checked with a regular tape measure.
TM...
My M1081 has the SRW and has helped me twice for certain! Once to move an empty 40' shipping container across the yard about 400'. Double pull using single snatch block on the container, the container weighs nearly 10,000 lbs empty. Second time was following weeks of rain and M1081 stuck itself...
I'll really be curious to see how and if flipping the mirrors works! While the Cascadia mirrors look good, I've got a M1081 and would like to keep the folding upper door capability, and make my mirrors more like the War Pig versions. Buying two drivers mirrors and flipping appropriately, mounted...
The TM for pulling the steering knuckles, which includes the king pins and re-shimming, is the -365-34-2, Task 9-6, page 9-22 or so. You shouldn’t need to re-shim yours.
I had to do it because the shimming wasn’t done correctly from the factory or something was WAY off on my truck. I needed...
BTW, the white sail-looking thing in the bed is a cover over my davit crane. Universal bolt-in crane that is attached to a custom T-shaped post that I can move to any of the in-bed corner pockets. Poor mans LMHC. 1000lbs at 48”. Handy for loading and unloading tires and other heavy stuff.
Work over the last few weeks
Coworker and I built wooden trays to fit the under bed storage compartments. I don’t have rails or seats, so these will be used for long cargo that won’t fit in the cab but don’t want exposed in the bed. Need to put pulls on the trays and hasps for padlocks on the...
Well, now that’s an interesting thought.
Based on my time shimming my LMTV king pins and looking at the TM’s, it should work.
It seems that the front axle shaft is a floater like the rear, only with a knuckle in the middle.
So, the four king pin bolts are tough, lots of torque. Even with the...
Also check your power and ground leads for the transmission and keypad. I spent two months fussing with my RV, Cummins 8.3 turbo with a WTEC-II Allison transmission, same code, same symptoms. I used 14ga twisted shielded pair wiring to replace all three sensor wires from sensor to the back of...
Wah. You’ve got a garage to work in and store your tools. I’m in an RV Park. Tools are in a utility trailer, no garage, can’t turn wrenches in the Park. But I have my LMTV in the storage area in the Park, and that helps scratch the itch! I’ve got a few buddies who have farms, and I can wrench...
Yup, found them. Just wish I’d found them two weeks ago, I live less than five miles from the El Paso County Fairground. Would have been a great opportunity at the Fair several weeks ago. But there’s events coming up...
