I fully understand machine crimped terminations, that encompass all sides in mandrel dies. Hand crimped terminations are a whole different animal.

Good news that you have no oil splattered around the inside.
Brushes can be found at Vintage Power Wagon or Midwest Military has complete rebuild kits.
You will need the proper test leads to check the output of the generator and or trouble shoot the regulator.

The tab on the float, that comes in contact with the needle will need to be bent very carefully to achieve the lower setting. We are on the right track now.

Update from last nights phone call so that those of you following this thread are not missing out.
We discussed a bunch of different ideas so that I could get a better idea of what to try next, here is the condensed version:
1) Checking the fuel level while the carb is still installed on the...
When you removed the top of the carburetor was the unit still installed on the manifold?
1) Was the area above the plunger full of gas?
2) Did the gas level seem correct in the bowl or was the gas running out over the top?

No oil contamination internally?
Do you have the test leads to check output once this is reinstalled on the truck?
Is the regulator the old adjustable style or new Solid State version?

Forgot to mention:
A) Welcome to the site
B) The end caps have "O" ring seals that is why they feel so tight. Probably hasn't been apart for many years. (No screwdriver to pry the ends off either because it will surely wreck the "O" rings.

The TM that you are looking for is TM 9-1825B
I have rebuilt several of these and they are really straight forward as long as you know a couple of the tricks.
The rear side is the end that the brush plate is screwed to. The cover will need a few light taps with a soft faced hammer to loosen it...
It is amazing how working on carburetors is becoming a lost art form with newer mechanics. If it doesn't throw a code to their scan tool, you might as well forget it.
I wish that I lived closer to you because we could of figured this out in a couple of hours on the bench.
