I see what happened. The wire you burned is supposed to go to the driver side 12 volt terminal block, not the 24 volt. You probably had the rear battery positive connected to the 24 volt bus, then tried to connect the back battery negative to the 24 volt bus.

Do you have a multimeter? Measure the coil resistance in both directions, use the higher resistance for polarity. If you get 400 ohms with the red lead on terminal 1, that will be the terminal the black pink wire goes to.

This is yet another reason to keep it stock. I would print out the wiring diagram and see if anybody in the area has a stock CUCV for comparison. Very difficult to diagnose online.
This polarity warning applies to all solenoids, marked or not. How do you know if there is a protection diode? Markings are there easy clue. But some aren't marked, testing with a multimeter is the only way to be sure.

Yes, it matters on some solenoids. Some may have a diode in parallel to the coil to snub back voltage generated when the solenoid disengages. The magnet field collapsing causes a sharp reverse current which arcs switch contacts and lets magic smoke out of transistors.

If the brake system has DOT5, there shouldn't be any corrosion so rebuild kit should be all that is needed. I've yet to encounter any corrosion in DOT5 systems.
I would wet sand 400 grit or gray scuff pad, then use Behr tinted to match. You can even spray with airless. Water cleanup, very durable once cured..takes a few weeks.

I would replace the ring. Correct diameters are the only critical dimensions. The insulation should be crimped to the end tabs to reduce stress, copper can fatigue at the sharp edge of the conductor crimp.
