    Possible fuel issue

Ouch..I assume when these vehicles are straight from the military..yet again this assumption trapped me. Glad you got it fixed easily

    Happy Times From Commifornia!!

Methanol is better than hydrogen and can be easily used in mechanical injection diesels as a bi fuel. Methane is best but methanol (natural gas alcohol) is easily stored.

    Possible fuel issue

If the thermal compensation leaf is solidly attached, there is no reason to replace without further testing. If you had a soldering iron, using it to heat the leaf would be a positive test. Beginning to think the prior owner adjusted the external idle speed, not knowing about the cold idle...

    Possible fuel issue

Looks clean. Metering valve looks like it moves freely. Try bumping idle speed, external screw on throttle arm. Realized with pump installed, you cannot spin it with a drill to see governor function. Thermal compensation looks ok.

Don't use E85..the alcohol is rough on injection pump. Alcohols are stiffer as they are less compressible than oils. This is why brake fluid is glycol. But in 7000 PSI injection systems, they cause excessive wear.

    Possible fuel issue

Ohh, a 4544. This is a 1986 year model HD pump with 54 mm^3 per stroke max fuel..range is 49.5 to 54 mm^3. Uses the 28370 governor cage so no flex drive ring to cause problems. Get some Diesel Mechanic in a Bottle, remove governor cover, drain as much diesel as possible and inspect the...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Among my many neuroses is counting off the pre glow time and subjective analysis of said time with ambient temperature. Then timing the cold start high idle, just a function check. When I liberated this M1031 SECM, the PTO generator wiring had significant errors, the first being the...

    Possible fuel issue

Before you tear into the IP, find out which calibration spec the pump was last built. The ID tag is on the drivers side body, stamped in metal. The pump is a DB2829-nnnn. The nnnn is the calibration spec. If an early model, it could have a flex ring governor coupling, these degrade and plug...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

The stock system engages when key is on, a yellow wait light illuminates. At summer ambient temperature, this takes 5 to 8 seconds. When it is 9°F, this is 40 seconds or more. Voice of experience here, that is the coldest I have experienced and in central Texas too.. After the light goes...

Ouch. Choices have consequences. Many have made the choice to be ignorant of history.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

It works, parts are available and wiring diagrams (corrected) are available. Yes, the new card is expensive but all other parts are inexpensive. While a push button is dead simple, the only real benefit would be a plausible theft deterrent. I would recommend looking over the existing glow...

    Alternator Squeal

This is why I have spare starter and alternator on hand. Should bolt it back together and try.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Aside from aging glow plugs and relay, the system in my 1031 has been faultless and perfectly reliable. Far better than the three iterations used on civy models.

    Possible fuel issue

Check cold, the riveted part on the arm must be tight and the spring should be up against it. The rivets can loosen, reducing the effectiveness of the temperature compensator. When the fuel heats, the compensator bends slightly towards the spring. The type of governor here is a...

    Possible fuel issue

The part is easy to inspect, only removing the IP cover required..you will lose about 25 cents worth of diesel 😣. A tight fitting screwdriver plus a tap with a hammer helps, seen more than one screw snap off. The thermal compensator only moves off the governor arm by about 0.003" at 150°F...

Any Good Diesel Mechanics in Southern California??

Download TM 9-2320-289-34 , page 3-183. 7 fasteners, 3 are studs mounting other brackets. These need removing before retorque of water pump fasteners. The pump mounts to the water pump plate which is sealed to the crankcase cover/timing case with anaerobic sealant (red gel which is a...

    Possible fuel issue

https://www.motortrend.com/features/0809dp-stanadyne-db2-injection-pump/ "Retention of heat is a critical factor in fuel thinning after a high-ambient heat soak. As the hotter, thinner fuel passes through the pump, internal leakage increases and reduces fuel output. To compensate for this loss...

    Possible fuel issue

Hot stall can be inadequate fuel return from the injection pump. The governor cage and weights spin at half crank speed, submerged in diesel which acts as an effective heater if fuel return is blocked. More importantly, if case pressure rises due to a blockage in fuel return, this will...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Alternators look good, did they load test? The isolated negative one I bought had a test report..not that I believe it..hopefully it has enough output to get me home in the event of a field swap.

    M1031 to RV tug..

Looks like I will replace the vacuum regulating valve on the IP throttle shaft with the 4l80 TPS to control VNT vanes. But this TPS will also control the THM400 with yet another PWM driven vacuum valve. This offers a bit of shift point tuning control..
