M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Yes, put some kind of grease on the splines, preferably new. GAA is a lithium complex grease. I think you said that the grease you're using is also lithium complex, so you should be fine.

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Eh, depending on what kind of greast the previous owner used, and the heat that the truck may have sat in, the grease in the knuckles could be OK. Well, assuming that he didn't do any deep water fording and wash it out. When you get the chance, remove the boots and scrape out all the old...

    Speedometer calibration with different tires?

Fudge. I was afraid of that. And 7 mph off at only 47mph is quite a deviation. The question is- is the RED gear that Kascar sells, correct for the 3L80 and meant for the 37 inch tires? I guess I'll have to call them unless someone here knows offhand.

    Speedometer calibration with different tires?

I did a search but didn't find an answer for this particular question: When the military switched from the old 36" bias tires to 37 inch radials, were the transmissions upgraded with a different speedometer gear to correct the speedometer? I'm making the swap this weekend and I'm curious as to...

Is the M1100 series an overall better vehicle than the previous A2 series?

Well, this is certainly reassuring for those of us who ended up with older models.

    Hmmwv vs Deuce

Do both! I did! My wife loves her HMMWV.

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

NO, the axle is isolated from the differential oil in pre-939 series trucks by seals. You pack the knuckle full of grease to lubricate the axle CV joint.

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

I don't think I even have a strap long enough to try it at the moment. Now you've got me curious, so I'll have to go out and measure.

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I always seem to miss the easy, obvious solutions.

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

Now that's an interesting method. If the hammer or chisel doesn't work, I'll try that.

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

Wes, the wrench will fit but how do you get enough torque on it to break the nut free? I feel like there's no way human strength will budge these after years of being tight.

Driving a personal Humvee on the streets while national guard is deployed in state

Oh yes, my house and vehicles have never been in such good shape!

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Fired up the 5-ton for the first time in a few weeks. I took it for a nice long, leisurely drive around town and dropped off some food items for my father-in-law who is holed up in his house due to the virus. Remember when you bought your first car as a kid, and it was a POS with all kinds of...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I re-packed my bearings completely by hand. It's not a crime. :) You just gotta keep grabbing handfuls and pushing it in, working your way around. You can easily get it as full as any bearing packing tool, it's just messier and a little more wasteful.

You're conducting personal business, not out stoking fear and confusion. I say, carry on.

So you didn't waste your money on that socket.

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Just to provide a more complete response to what I said earlier- I froze my seals and I used @Brutacus' method using the hub flange to carefully drive it in. By the time the seal was installed, it was warm and pliable enough to reassemble everything.

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Sand blasting, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

Freeze 'em. Do think the rubber gets damaged in winter time? ;)

    Any Marines around?

You guys are too friggin' cool. Thanks!
