I did the light sanding trick and was able to uncover all the unit markings on my wife's truck. I wanted to record them before we paint over them.
Turns out the truck was a Marine vehicle. I found "USMC XXXXX" on either side of the sling brackets on the hood. Numbers were destroyed, couldn't...
As with my 5-ton, the wife's HMMWV seems pretty long in the tooth, with many unit markings painted over.
I did uncover "C4ISR OTM" on one fender, so I guess it was a command and control truck at one point, plus it has the MWO tag for a PRC installation.
I like history. It's interesting to...
As usual, the answer is- "It depends."
Is your HMMWV a meticulously restored specimen with a chicken plate and replica .50 on top? Are you stuck in your "glory days", driving around in your BDU's? Well, I wouldn't do that right now.
Is your HMMWV more like mine, with mismatched desert tan and...
As I had the front suspension exposed yesterday, I pondered the job of cleaning it all and painting it.
I have blasted it with a pressure washer. Didn't do much. Yesterday, I scraped a lot of mud off with a wire brush. That was better but in no way good enough to paint.
What the heck are you...
Dug into the driver's portal hub today. One, clean pint of oil came out, one fresh pint went in. Spindle nut was inspected and found to be secured and both tabs fully engaged.
I will be upgrading to the locking nut kit but I'm holding onto my cash for a moment to see where this virus garbage...
Also of special note in the -10 Operator's Manual, do NOT shift the transfer case while the engine is running. I drove the damned things in the reserves for 9 years and never knew this because we never went deep off-road.
So, it looks like I'm leaking from the input seal (inner-upper).
I'm looking at the -20 and all it says is:
That means that I can reuse my existing shims without ordering new ones? Is it bad to reuse the shims?
Also, the seal procedure doesn't explain how to determine how many shims to set...
Got my passing ticket from the safety inspector.
Now the truck is home and I'm fixing the stuff that I want to fix, instead of what the state wants me to fix.
Gave the truck an oil change with Rotella 4T. Amazing how much quieter it is and how much faster oil pressure builds up from a cold...
@Inspector 1
I recently learned that there are "early" and "late" 10k axles. In order to upgrade to 12k, you need to replace the spur gear in the hubs and other things.
It seems doubtful that someone would upgrade 3 axles to 12k along with the spur gears and other work, but not the last one...
