    1986 M1008 losing power

How hot is the injection pump when it loses power? The pump is cooled by fuel returning to the tank. If there is no return fuel, pressure in the case retards timing and decreases injected quantity.

Max tire size for stock M1008

Change in tire size will impact speedometer accuracy, larger tires will make actual speed higher than indicated. You can change the drive gear to compensate. First, make sure the speedometer is correctly nulled, this is the needle at the zero mark with the truck stopped. The needle is only a...

    M1009 temp gauge

Stock heater core and heater works great for pickup cab but nearly nothing for the 1009 when it is really cold. Blocking the radiator won't do much unless your thermostat is failed open. I would go with a supplemental heater mounted between the front seats. There is plenty of coolant flow...

    Alternator Questions

I've had good luck with DB Electrical starters from Amazon. They have isolated negative 27SI type 100 for $165. Worth it for a spare so you can rebuild the original on your spare time. No core charge, brand new.

    6.2 diesel overcharging

The regulator is in the alternator. The driver side alternator does not have a relay, it is switched with the key switch through the alternator 1 light on the dash. Originally, the 27SI regulator was supposed to default to the battery voltage if the sense voltage was zero but with offshore...

    6.2 diesel overcharging

Voltage regulator is defective. Check for battery voltage at #2 connection. Could be an open fusible link. The #1 connection on the internal regulator is from the idiot light so it should be 0 volts with key off, 12 volts or so key on. #2 should always have 12 volts on the driver's side...

    Harmonic Balancer

Lots of AC Delco is made in China. Just saying.. The dampers I have bought from O'Reilly's are made in Australia. Nothing special about the steel parts, the key component is the rubber ring and its bond to the steel.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Road test. Grocery getting. The most mundane yet important role for any vehicle. Plus hardware run. Flawless if slow. Tortoise beats the hare. If I am going to burn 3 doll hairs of dino diesel squeezings, I'm getting some merch. And do it in style.

    What Is This Dashboard Sound??

This is the area needing grease. The rotating magnet is connected to the brass hub which engages the cable. The magnet rotates, inducing eddy currents in the cup attached to the speedometer needle. The faster the magnet turns, the greater the torque on the cup. When the bushing runs dry, it...

    What Is This Dashboard Sound??

A healthy dab of regular axle grease will fix it. Stuff it into the cable housing and snap it back onto the speedometer. The bushing is dry. The cable has a bit of torsional spring to it so it forms a resonant pair.

    Wiring diagram

The passenger side alternator negative terminal connects to the back battery negative through the 12 volt diamond-shaped terminal block on the firewall near the brake master cylinder. Remember, the back battery negative is connected to the front battery positive. The back battery positive...

Engine Bay Platform for your CUCV - Tip

Neat. I bought a tire step for side access, also works for upper cabinets on the SECM body over the rear wheels. Guess I will have to measure for the frame extensions and make my own. Also would make a handy work bench.

M1009: fuel level sending unit, & towing hitch?

I was gifted a Kindle Fire 7 from uncle Jeff. It works great for TMs. Under 50 doll hairs and enough bit storage internally for all the TMs.

    What's the different between 135 and 156 HP on 6.2 Diesel M1008

The label on the air filter housing shows the horsepower and injection quantity. It is 155 Hp on my M1031. The TM shows high temperature and altitude derating.

    Hex Bolt

9.8 is the grade. EL is the manufacturer. Don't skimp here and follow the torque spec.

    Swollen glow plug removal

Guess I lucked out. Never had a single plug swell. What causes it? Age and design. If air or more importantly, oxygen, hits the actual heating element, it causes expansion. The outer sheath which shields and seals the actual heating element from combustion is very resistant to oxidation...

    Don’t know Glow!

I found yet another use for my Harbor Freight battery load tester..yes, checking glow plugs. You need an extension for the red lead which is connected to the positive terminal on the front battery. The black clamp goes on the glow plug. Engaging the switch puts 12 volts or so through the glow...

    Faulty Fuel Solenoid??

Did you suddenly let off the throttle and it died? Sticking metering valve. It slams shut in such conditions under the force of the fly weights, then the idle spring force is the only thing which can pull it open.

M1031 PTO Gen.... Almost working.. Need some advice

The issues I have had with mine have been install related. The first being the power to the injection pump was connected to the green wire for timing advance and high idle. It was always supplying power to this circuit instead of the pink wire. The purpose of this circuit is emergency kill of...
