The reed switches have always been made that way. Back before the Mil-Stan gen sets, they were not in the gas/gas package. They were highly unreliable. The floats were a problem for a long time. The magnets fell out. Or when fuel pumps went bad, a fine metal "power" coated the floats/magnets...
Yeah, would say the IP's need to be pulled and cleaned. If it still wont start, remove the injectors and turn the injector input lines to the side and then put the injectors back on the lines. Turn the set over to see if you are getting fuel to the injectors.

But, now, you run the risk of the fuel leaking backwards in the system. Meaning its harder to start. The glass ball is there for a reason. It would have been better if you had taken the fitting containing the ball, out and soaking it for a day or two in something to remove the diesel crud and or...
