If you do not want to pay retail you have to play the GL game.
Either inspect the item, pay scrap price or just roll the dice. How does a three hour drive end up being a twelve hour recovery?
If you buy a trailer from GL assume the tires will be flat and the lights do not work.
If I tow a...
I have been told that the MT654CR is considered an obsolete transmission by Allison so some of the information about this transmission is not available on the internet like the MT643 and MT653.
Once an Allison is locked it should stay locked in those gears. It should not be unlocking by it own...
Have you read the Allison operators manual?
The Allison is not like your car automatic.
There is a lot of adjustment on these trans but they are best adjusted on the dyno.
Do you feel an extra shift where the RPM's only drop about 200? This should be in 4 the gear, if my memory is correct...
Transport width is a much bigger concern than fuel milage.
If you are worried about fuel milage, you are in the wrong hobby.
If you are concerned about parts buy a couple of parts vehicles and keep them inside.
Keep at least one set of filters, belts and hoses on hand if you can not cross...
The FMTV battery boxes are real cool. After you remove the lid you can flip the two levers and the whole tray slides out. You can also mount 3 air tanks to the bottom.
GL sold off a bunch of them recently for dirt cheap.
You are welcome
I started doing it years ago with a m416 and has worked well with the m101 and m116 series of trailers
If this is still to short you could double the shackles but I would wire the tow hooks for safety
Technically you are always required to wire the tow hooks so they do not...
I use shackles to extend the chains, you just have to remember to have the trailer straight with the truck when you hook and unhook them. You can still have trouble crossing them.
I agree that the 5 ton forum needs to be segregated into the early 5 tons ( ending with the 800 series) the 939 series trucks. The 915 through 920 series trucks should get there own forum and there should be a separate forum for over 5 ton
There also needs to be a separate forum for RV...
There is a small 13 speed out there.
Be careful with a transmission with a deep reduction first gear. This could lead to issues just as using the stock transmission in reverse in low range.
What you should do is take the truck to a local heavy duty gear shop and see what they think.
The...
They can be found in wrecked toy haulers. Check with any rv wrecking yards in your area.
A 2 or 3 inch memory foam pad will make them much more comfortable
This has been an issue since I grew up in New Jersey. Back in the day it was full size trucks with 40" or 44" mudders or super swampers.
We switched to mini trucks and jeeps to eliminate the trail damage.
Most of the trails that used to run would be damaged if you ran a 6x6 down them. The...
This is glad hand one that I use on some trucks.
This is one mounted on an air tank. All you need to do is install it into an unused fitting on one of the tank just make shore you use quality pressure rated fittings and not the Home Depot junk.
Driving an Allison is not like driving the automatic in your car. You need to read the Allison drivers manual. You can, and I do, shift an Allison manually.
I have researched the mechanical Allison's and the ones that I have found have a 1:1 final drive, no overdrive.
To get an overdrive in an Allison you have to go to an electronic transmission. This would require some custom parts to mate the electronic trans to a mechanical engine.
It would be interesting but the geometry would take a lot if engineering and some experimenting to get it correct.
A friend did it on a two axle off road truck using a joy stick and it was fun.
In order to fit a 20 foot container on a M35 you would need a long wheel base truck. The added length of the truck greatly decreases it off-road capability. The second issue is weight capacity, an empty container is at or near the off-road capacity of the vehicle.
An S-280 shelter is a better...
A civilian camper would probably be damaged towed off-road, non road.
You would be better off with a s-280 shelter or a tractor with a m146.
If I wanted to build a off grid camp I would install a roll off on my truck and build modules at the shop and haul them to the site.
A 20 foot...
On a paved lot we tow the dolly as close to the trailer as possible and line it up by hand and use the truck to connect it.
At my place I use a forklift to get the dolly into position. You could use any type of equipment with a pintle hook or ball mounted on it.
Some people install a pintle...
