These things were designed to be sealed, and pressurized with a gas - nitrogen I think. And periodically inspected. If the pressure gauge is not indicating is pressurized, and based on the missing bolts, its probably not, then these cans can sweat on the inside - leaving the engine a rusty...
Hmm.....well, did the truck come direct from DRMO to the civilian world, or did it pass through a forest service, etc. The first number looks much like an inventory control number from a state agency. The second number is more puzzling - the B10 sounds much like a figure number from a TM, but...
I would say that you have bent a pushrod on an exhaust valve. The exhaust WILL (and is) finding the way out. You may or may not have driven it enough to ruin the head gasket. You ARE getting huge compression blowby. I've been there, done this, and the symptoms you describe are exactly what I...
I stopped in this museum the day after the Aberdeen Rally - one of the most interesting aspects cannot be conveyed in photos - no matter how good they are. When visiting the Korean War Chosin Reservoir full-size diorama, it is uncomfortably cold, and the gunfire is rather loud. The Vietnam...
Are you sure that this is a M108 body - or does it just LOOK like a M108 body? Better would be to get the Austin Western model number. This should be on a tag on the shipper near the pivot point on the operator's side of the crane.
I've done a bit of research into military wreckers, and there...
The detail you are probably forgetting about trying to repower/re transmission these trucks is - it has a single speed transfer case. High and low range selection occurs inside the transmission.

RE: Duece original gov
I'll have to dig them up - but I do have copies of some of the first contracts Reo was given for the G742 vehicles, which naturally includes costs - and what those costs were to include. I think I also have some of the International contracts for the five tons. I'll try...
I'd like to correspond with owners of 1969-produced two and 1/2 ton trucks.
If you are not sure what model your truck is, IF the truck is ex-army, and if its original registration number (NOT manufacturer's serial number) is known - the last two digits of the registration number are "69".
I...
With that number, NO ONE can give you the date of manufacture (but a lot of folks will guess 1969). BUT, PM me with the registration number and/or the VIN number and I can probably help.

RE: multifuel motors used in farm tractors
Found a few more details - I wrote this back in 2003 - have found additional info since, but nothing to contradict what follows.

In the late 1950s the military was keenly interested in developing powerplants that could run on...
It'll be a few more days before I get home - so I can't at this time address specifics and cite references. However, the LDS-427 was not built from the ground up as a Multifuel engine. A Continental engineer saw a MAN engine on display in Europe that was being promoted, IIRC, as the "Whisper...
Check with Dave Pizzoferrato at WeeBee Webbing - he is restoring one of these (he previously restored a M170 to ambulance configuration as well).
Hope this helps,
David
I've always like the Multifuel - and still do.
The foremost thing to remember here is that, per other documents I've recently uncovered, many of these trucks were given NO regularly scheduled preventative maintenance. This was in large part because there were far too many trucks, and far too...
Found this in an official document:
"Though not a maintenance fault, failures of multifuel engines created the requirement for a major off-shore maintenance effort and a sizeable supply problem. In January 1967, more than 300 5-ton trucks were deadlined in Vietnam because of inoperative...
