I think the M813 w/w with dump hoist thought of wreckerman's is a pretty good one.
An M817 has a higher rear bed lip due to the dump box shape and it's harder to load with stuff like brush, lumber, construction materials etc. From memory the rear lip of an M817 bed is above my shoulders at...
I sometimes wonder if the DLA folks at Battle Creek work the same way GL does in that GL has one person handle all the EUCs from a single auction. Larger auctions equal longer times to wrapping up the last EUCs. There have been a lot of 3/4 ton trailers coming out all over the country which...
They are just a way to lock up the cargo. If you want a box truck I guess it's worth keeping. If you want the versatility of a soft cargo top, take it off.

My f-350 dually weighs 7,400# with the fiberglass cab and ladder rack and almost 1,000# more with both tanks full and my tools. Our 36' fifth wheel RV weighed almost 13,000# with the fresh water tank full and a full load for camping. That sat on four tires and two landing legs. No problems...
Keep in mind that if you put in an NTC 400 and use the power for really fast acceleration as opposed to more gentle acceleration and maintaining highway speed you'll be twisting parts off the drivline in short order.
The injectors and turbo in the 400 will have a big effect on how the engine is...
They do shift with some, ummm.... authority, don't they? If your not kinda gentle with the fuel it'll chirp the tires without trying.
Nice looking rig.

The M35A2 I use off road and around the farm has both a dry chemical and a CO2 extinguisher. One is mounted on the rear slope of the driver side wheel well and the other is mounted on the curve of the cab just behind the driver's door between the cab and bed. I wanted them in plain sight...
The M116 trailer is the designation of the original bare chassis. The cargo body bolted to it changed it to a Trailer, Cargo, 3/4 ton M101.
Some variations such as the generator bed or the pioneer tool beds did not get a new model number, just a name change i.e. Trailer, Generator or...
And here I sit waiting word on 4991 and 5007.
Hey, DH, I bought 2 more yesterday, too. that makes an M813A1 and 4 M101a2s "in the mill" Maybe we should just move there....

Oh, it's squatting pretty good. Look at the difference in the wheel well clearance between the 4th and the last 2 pics. I'd guess that load is about all that railer wants to know about on an unpaved surface.

Just as a word of warning. The services stopped using them many years ago due to their trapping moisture and accelerating the corrosion of the cables.
I'd avoid a winch cover if the vehicle is ever kept outdoors.

From the description of the wheel hopping I'd suspect your sprag was engaging, at least partially. My experience has been that the sprag will only engage when the rear wheels are slipping. It will disengage as soon as the rears grip and you let off the power.
To test the sprag:
Jack either...
Hello, Glenn
As far as "advice" my input would be to start by thinking about how you will ACTUALLY use the truck as opposed to daydreaming about how you MIGHT use it. I guess it's the MV version of the true story of the guy who owns a paddle sports shop who says that he is perpetually amazed...
I appreciate that thet standard M116 is considered a 3/4 ton trailer. However, a large number were given uprated suspensions and the model designation remained the same. All they got was an additional data plate on the forward frame. I can't remember what the "new" capacity was.
I don't...
Check this thread. I think you'll be surprised how much weight a tire will carry. Even a singled 9.00-20 NDT will carry more than the gross weight of an M35 series truck.
