Because the key things that determine fuel economy aren't very different between any trucks like this. The weight doesn't matter much, except during acceleration... so a fully loaded semi isn't far off these numbers either (probably 4 MPG). The air resistance is the biggest factor, followed by...
My guess is that the difference is trivial in the small scale (e.g. mileage from a tank). The truck is designed to get about 6MPG, 300 miles on a tank full. Any changes due to EFI are going to be small percentages - I would guess maybe 5%, and probably not more than 10% improvement.
The...
Yes, this is the heart of the ridiculousness of the argument every time it comes up. Essentially yes, newer is better. Those opposed to change always point out some edge case where it isn't. I'm also a mechanical engineer, so I know better than anyone that not every new idea works out great...
Justin,
I think that you're overthinking or over scrutinizing this. The FMTV is fine, and according to the military the most reliable vehicle they have ever had. The 3116 engine is fine, and used in hundreds of thousands (millions?) of dump trucks and other medium duty stuff (not to mention...
Every truck will be a little different, but I have my spreadsheet (here in my signature) and there is another one stickied in the FMTV forum. The parts manual also lists all the part numbers for everything in the truck at the time it was built (there are some newer versions of things not in...
I've wondered about those bulbs. They are designed to be used in a housing with a reflector, which is why the LED actually faces back. I hesitated to buy them, thinking they wouldn't project enough light toward traffic.
Even if you can't get an accurate enough MPG from one tank, they do even out over multiple tanks. If you stopped filling 10 gallons low on one tank, your MPG would be high, but on the next tank if you filled all the way up MPG will be low, and they average out.
That's interesting about the...
I would. They aren't very expensive, and they seem to be a part that frequently springs an annoying leak (not really frequently, but far more valve cover gaskets go than head gaskets, or other things). For $20, it's just good practice to change it.
