Hmmm,I guess I can chime in on this thread,having owned a 816 and now a M62A1.
I use the heck outa mine,rarely a week goes by that it doesn't get used,granted the 816 got lots more "road time" vs "yard time".
I did several recoveries with the 816(5000+ miles in 3 years) and have towed...

The axles are the same ratio in the M54 and the 816,it's a bolt in swap.If you don't wanna part out the M54 I have a couple 5 ton rears out back that I could pull the diff on.
Ok,been following this thread and figured I would post what I use and have had good luck with,
I use Costal 80W90 GL-5 for the axles,winches and all other gear boxes on all of my trucks,except for the trans and transfer cases,I use Castrol C50 drivetrain lubricant for those on all my trucks...
