I am from the "ragtop" fraction. I would seriously consider your hard top, if it looked like the original and had a price point that is significantly more sane than what people are asking for surplus ones.
Great idea and I wish you success with the prototype!
My ex-service OCD does not allow me to leave winch cable criss-crossed for long periods of time. Re-wound all winch cable after cleaning and spraying with cable lube and hammering the first layer tightly into place. Winch works flawlessly under load (winched truck up a hill) and winch clutch...
Update:
I read a LOT of winch repair and rebuild thread information. Fascinating. I recommend THIS thread: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?80417-Winch-Teardown-Q
I felt that the most likely two issues with my winch clutch no longer dis-engaging were either a twisted clutch shaft or...
The Canadian military used these M135 until the 1980'. They are becoming somewhat rarer as many that were kept running by private owners were subsequently sold and "used up" by owners down the line.
The parts train is also slowly drying up, from what I can see. It seems that many vendors simply...
Make sure it is indeed the drum itself and not the mounting surface. You can always go to a place that turns truck brake drums and have them check runout on yours.
Has your truck always vibrated that way? The drums are quite massive, but if Soldier A dropped the truck onto the drum(s), they...
There are a few reasons why this could happen, such as a leaking flame heater nozzle, the O-rings in the hydraulic head, the fuel density compensator. Search for "Deuce making oil" to get started.
If you need help with searching, look at this: http://bit.ly/1wfnG4i
Here you go. Owned by the local gas station guy I think it is 1954. V-8 Rolls Royce gas engine (good that the guy owns a gas station!). Runs well but needs a bit of TLC. It leaks hydraulic fluid (has marginal brakes), there is water in one of the headlights. Radiator weeps when hot (I think that...
Got her out.
I could turn the winch driveshaft with a large screwdriver in the U joint. Lined up the holes and swapped the shear pin. Then I could un-spool under power and get rid of the tension on the winch line. So much easier in day light!
However: The clutch does not disengage. The lever...
HAD to try to get through a mud hole. Got stuck. Winched myself out without issues.
Trying to get back to the road I got stuck again, in an awkward spot with nothing to hook to that was in line with the truck. Awkward pull at an angle of about 40 degrees - I know better, but there was no other...
"Moving" might not be good enough for the fuel shutoff. It is a bit of a bugg** because it can look as if it were working , but isn't. Maybe this helps: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?103256-M35A2-no-fuel-at-injectors...
For small lengths of DOT air line I go to my local truck stop/truck repair shop. If I do not need yards of the stuff they just give me some cutoffs to make me go away. It is so cheap that it is not worth their time and printer paper to print an invoice.
Looks like a former National Guard truck (oval markings on bumper). Also I see a muffler. She's a twin to mine (also M35A2C) but my winch was added by the military at some point (dataplate says wo/w). They added tailgate steps as bumper steps, so someone cared for that truck at some time. These...
Air stop light switch - NAPA replacement
Had bad luck with original military air stop light switches. They range in price from $45 upwards.
Checked with NAPA and purchased 036036 S14 stop light switch. It is an ugly white plastic contraption, but for $16 I am not looking back. Made two...
Wrestled with the pipe plug on the thermostat housing. Finally got it to move. Threaded in a reducer bushing and threaded a brass thermocouple ("thermostat" for the ether kit) into that. Promptly overtorqued and broke the threaded brass part off the hex headed thermostat. Could not get a grip on...
