He is in south Florida, there is not that much difference there between summer and winter (partly depending on how far south, and how close the coast)
ike
p.s. I once spent the whole month of December (20+ years ago) in south Florida (5 week training course for work), housing for all of us...
1800 Diesel, I let that happen once trying to get a 4 cylinder John Deere diesel engine on a Kohler 30KW generator started, I had soaked a red shop rag in gasoline and had it tucked under the edge of the air filter. The engine suddenly came to life, sucked the rag down the intake made one giant...
Just one thing that may or may not be related to your problem, rotor insulation failure seems to be very common on the MEP-018a for some reason, there was a guy either on here or over on the smokstak board a couple of years ago that had one that the rotor went bad on, and he ended up buying 2 or...
Are you sure about that, I find it hard to believe there are 2 businesses in Baytown Texas that sell surplus generators, and both have a guy named Tom as their prime contact, and GC or Gulf Coast in their names.
Ike
p.s. I have had no actual dealings with Tom, just exchanged a couple of...
I can't help on the specifics, but fuel economy should be around 5 GPH at rated 60 KW load, this is based on the published information for commercial generators (Onan) using similar Allis Chalmers turbo diesels (60KW Onan DYA powered by slightly smaller Allis Chalmers 2900 rated at 4.8 GPH and...
Why worry with 24V, it is a series wound starter motor, and supplies enough speed / torque to start the engine if the compression release button us pressed first when jumping from a 12V battery.
Ike
p.s. there is no such thing as a DC to DC transformer, the closest thing would be a DC to DC...
Jimc, that last comment made me think of something, I think the MEP-002a and MEP-003a have similar looking, but differently marked dip sticks, if this unit has a MEP-003a dip stick installed it may be off on oil level. Just a thought, I am not sure how much different they are or which reads...
All I can say is my MEP-002a is the same way, must shut down and restart to flash, there seems to be lots of details of the wiring on these units that may or may not be by the book.
My understanding is the military considered them deployable at up to 5,000 hours, which would suggest a service life of longer than that. Over on the Smokstak generator board there are a few known documented cases of Onan DJB / DJC generators (which use the civilian version of the same engines...
Like Jim said, we had one guy here that owned multiple MEP-002 / MEP-003 generators that had bought one MEP-002a from GL (or other government auction source) and was surprised to find it was a MEP-002a with a MEP-003a generator end connected, he was also surprised at how the larger MEP-003a...
You might also try seeing if it works (reliably) with the flash circuit removed, I suspect the SX-460 will build output with a much smaller residual voltage than the original AVR
Ok, here is my take on things: All military generators are ultra conservatively rated compared to commercial models, and the ratings of consumer generators are a fantasy of their respective marketing departments. So a 3KW military MEP-016 family generator is closer to the kind of thing you...
Most often when there is a problem with (mostly cheaper) multimeters they will read roughly some multiple of the actual frequency, so if you see something like 189 hz you should KNOW that the generator is not running at over 3 times its rated speed, your clue here is that the pistons are still...
I agree in concept with what your doing, and Flight Systems does certainly make some good equipment I am just not sure if you will see a reliability improvement going that route over the stock voltage regulation systems assuming it is in good shape given your are trading Tantalum capacitors on...
If you don't have any other military vehicles and still want the jump starting option on the MEP-016 generator (might this be a MEP-016D which does not have an onboard battery?) It is a lot cheaper to add a Anderson SB connector pigtail and an SB to clamp style jumper cable so you can jump it...
