Great write-uo! I've been having soft shift issues with very sluggish downshifting at wide open throttle. I checked all vacuum lines, no leak. Vacuum pump pulls a pulsating vacuum 18-20 " Hg, vacuum at the modulator is 15" Hg and rising slowly, not responding to any throttle position.
From...
It was the meter itself, the needle was getting pinched between the dial back and the glass. I took it apart by carefully prying the crimped bezel, then carefully bent the needle. Checked it out with 28.8 volts from a regulated power supply before crimping it back together. It is now in the...
There are at least two styles of voltmeters. The plastic hold-down appears to be newer. Mine had the older metal style hold-down. It appears in your picture to have been modified for the plastic hold down. The original meter also use a bracket spot welded to the plate, you can see where it...
522 miles is still a good drive. Reminds me of the late June recovery of my M1031. We flat towed it from Ft. McCoy WI to Central Texas. The tires were nearly new on both vehicles, the towing was smooth but we took it easy on speed and following distance.
Replacing the hydraulic head isn't too terribly difficult. If you can get the injector lines reinstalled correctly . Look up how to time the quill gear correctly, remembering the centrifugal advance will bump the timing and the quill has a window which allows for only one installation...
There WILL be an issue since the truck's hotel loads are handled by the front battery alone. These would be all lights, the blower fan and the few sensors. The issue will be the front battery being discharged while the rear battery is overcharged.
Now if you ran the 12 volt loads off a 28 to...
IIRC, there isn't a window for tappet removal like for most pushrod engines. I've seen this engine with the valley cover removed, it is solid cast iron.
Why did vehicles go from 6 volts to 12 in the 1950s? Because you can get more current through the starter, meaning the starter turns over faster.
Back then, battery manufacture was all manual labor, each cell in a lead-sulfuric acid battery generates about 2 volts. So 12 volt batteries were...
It is no different than house wiring, only instead of the middle being ground, the negative of the 12 volt side is ground. You have TWO 12 volt systems, combined you have 24 volts.
You CAN run 12 volt loads off the rear battery, you have to use the 12 volt side for the negative. Meaning BOTH...
Turning up the fuel. You can do it, it will work but for how long? On a 1009 without towing anything, sure. But a 1010 towing a good load?
This is done on turbo conversions to get the power, the turbo alone does nothing but allow more air. Power is done by more fuel, the additional air...
Ugh! I remembered in addition to the wheels, the spare tire carrier needs stripping. Tomorrow I will wear a dust mask when using the wire wheel. Also, doing it outside during the cooler morning will help.
Shooting color (Sinai Gray is a color 2cents) in the afternoon should make this...
The 28MT starters are easier to install since they are half the weight. Oddly enough, gear reduction starters were introduced in the military MEP 002/003A generators around the same time with the same benefits.
Sure, sounds like magic to have half the starter work better but remember, we are...
You might have damaged the contactor on the starter. Starters are shunt wound so the current increases with speed and since cranking speed is 200-250 RPM, the 650 RPM will allow excess current. This can damage the contactor plate, making it stick.
I cannot see the Trombetta solenoid relay...
Finally got time to finish the air conditioner compressor frame. Minor welding, more marking and drilling.
Yes, frame and not bracket. This is a 28 volt electric motor driven unit. This frame is mounted to the frame rail under the passenger seat.
I still need more #6 refrigerant hose, even...
The reason for the under dash relay is to keep the ignition switch 12 volts. It also prolongs contact life in the column-mounted switch. That relay is far easier to swap.
The original is far too weak for the inductive kick in the starter solenoid. Unlike pure electrical solenoid relays, the...
The under-dash relay wires are 12 AWG, except for the ground for the solenoid. That is insufficient for 200 amps steady state. I believe the 200 amp capacity is for inrush current, this and more importantly, the back EMF from the interruption in the current (the opposite effect of inrush) are...
Used my M1031 SECM to build an electric fence. Air-operated T-post driver, electricity and air all at hand. :grd:.
This vehicle is the perfect ranch truck.
