What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

6.2s are DETROIT DIESEL designs. Cook? Only if you try to hit the governor limit. The cooling system is more than adequate.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Ok, here are the pictures from my compressor remount job. First, you see how it is mounted. Simple 1" square tube spanning the width. The 3/8" bolt mounting bolts run through 1/2" OD 16 gauge tube which has an ID just over 3/8". This keeps the tubing from crimping. The right side ends are...

    A/C on the CUCV

You will need at least 30 amperes to run the stock 12 volt system. Consider headlights at 5 amps each, blower motor at 10 amps and 1 amp for all marker/running lights. Then the dash lights, horn and wipers. I would recommend a small 8 to 10 amp hour sealed lead acid battery to assure you...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I moved the air compressor in my M1031 SECM to on top of the generator. Real simple shelf made of two 1' square tubes, extending from the generator power panel to the cross brace channel on the right hand side. Is sure frees up floor space AND makes oil changes easier. on the compressor...

    Alternator Wires

Ok, orange makes sense. Yes, it is possible for the regulator to fail to where it won't turn the light on when running. It also won't turn on when the ignition is on and engine not running.

Capability vs. Vulnerability & Sophistication vs. Complexity

I've jump started many vehicles, NATO cables and the older USGI two-pin slave cables make it a SNAP. So keeping the 24 volt setup is a must for me. Plus you have a spare alternator in the CUCV so if the left alternator goes out, swap the alternators and you can self-recover. You also have a...

    Alternator Wires

The middle post is the tach signal for the Standard Test Equipment for Internal Combustion Engines port, that big round connector with screw cap on the bottom of the dash. There shouldn't be another wire connected to the negative post. Did the twin plastic connector have two wires on it...

    Cucv gooseneck or fifth wheel

Not a M1010 or M1031 with SECM on back :doghead:. They are 1 ton chassis.

Poll - Who has done the Doghead Relay Conversion

Yeah, I could do it in my sleep when the connector is hanging loose. Being a preservationist, I don't cut the connector off but make short pigtails, using 1/4" spade terminals to plug into the factory connector. I saw the relay in the LMC catalog last night, it is a BLOWER MOTOR relay :shock...

    Albino 84 CUCV

I'm also working on an albino M1009. It had been painted white for post security on a National Guard post. It ran tonight, needs brakes and minor body work. Plus welding on the left seat mounting area, it is cracked and sagging through the floor. Looks like fatigue failure.

What modifications should I do for my 1009?

I'm thinking complete brake inspection. Not to rain on the parade, we still have not inspected and tested the drive train. Things that could need work include the vacuum regulator, modulator and governor. Then there is the glow plug issue. 4 of the 8 had bullet terminal glow plugs attached...

What modifications should I do for my 1009?

We also bench tested the alternators. How? A little 12 volt sealed lead acid battery, a small lighbulb, the two pole Delco connector and some wire. The lightbulb was hooked up to the switched connection, usually a color other than red, the red goes to the positive on the battery as this is...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I did another mechanic job WITH my 1031 SECM over the weekend. Put over an hour on the generator and air compressor to power my air tools. I've never had a MacPhearson strut job go easier since impact wrench reduces muscle fatigue. Have tools, will travel.

    Oil Fairy?!?!

That is what it is called in the manuals. Yes, I KNOW it is activated by Bowden cable to the dash, right next to the master power switch. Yes, for the past 100 years, solenoid has earned the definition of linear electromagnetic motor. But it is a French word for cylinder. Did you know shock...

    Location of Engine Coolant Drain?

A shop vac set up for wet vacuum works wonders in draining blocks, heater cores and other problem coolant areas. Just make sure you have air flow. This really helps when removing cylinder heads. Let it run for 15 minutes to pull it clean.

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

Thanks for the pictures. I've been helping a fellow member here in an M37 restoration. Sounds like your engine issue is valves. Common issue, should be easy to fix. The wiring is going to be interesting. You will get tired of Douglass Connectors. I would go with newer style rubber plugs if...

    Oil Fairy?!?!

That is the quantity adjuster lever. Yes, the shut-off solenoid presses on it, over-riding the governor spring force. Anyhow, this is one possible leak points for diesel to get into the crankcase since the injection pump is lubricated with engine oil. The o-ring is a static seal, the shaft...

    MEP-025a - Inverter Recommendations

If you are running that inverter off that generator, use a good battery bank in between. Two 100 amp-hour deep cycle batteries would be fine for 30 minutes of silent power at 2300 Watts. I have that inverter. Works great, just being a modified sine wave, motors like fans run with a bit more...

    Over Pressure Cooling System

Partial failure of the head gasket. There is only a single passage for pressurized oil through the head gaskets, there are 4 big holes with compression pressure that can leak into the cooling passages. Time to pull the heads and replace gaskets. Also, with a 1992 engine, you should replace...
