    Working on the M37

If you have the same harness, it is quite easy to test out of the vehicle as the wires are color coded. Now, if you have a broken connection in the multi-pin light switch connector, it is pretty easy to take apart. First, you must remove it from the light switch. Pull back enough of the...

    6.2 Vacuum Pump

Grease is great here. Won't harm a thing.

Capability vs. Vulnerability & Sophistication vs. Complexity

Another vote for the harmonic damper. Most of the crankshaft and block failures are caused by the damper failing or just getting old. The rubber hardens, then loses its damping capacity.

    locker noise

Yes, rickf, the clamping force on the clutch packs IS non-linear. The side-spider interaction acts to boost the velocity of the spinning side, due to non-linear application of clutch clamping force, things can come apart.

    locker noise

Where are the LOCKING surfaces? Compare and contrast Figures 111 (Detroit Locker) to Figure 113 (Gov-Lok). Specifically, on Figure 111, items 24 and 25 are the locking elements with dogs that positively engage. On Figure 113, the multiple plates and washers are friction surfaces, much like a...

    locker noise

Go take a look at Figure 113 in the -34P and tell us what you see. The governor is an axle velocity governor. Specifically look at items 6, 8, 14 and 15. Those are the CLUTCH PACKS.

    locker noise

The 1009s have a limited slip differential which uses standard spider/side gear type of differential, the limited slip is handled with clutches. The Detroit Locker on the 1 tons is a sprag clutch system which eschews with the side and spider gears to differentiate axle velocities. It can make...

    Working on the M37

I used another MacGuyver wire to make BOTH stoplights work. Basically, this is a 3-bulb turn-brake/marker/BO marker tail lamp. The way it was wired was for right side BO stop, left side service stop. The way we wired it, both service markers run off the same lead but each brake had its own...

What modifications should I do for my 1009?

The Doghead mod is a must, the truck is missing the rectangular metal can starter relay. IOW, it isn't currently running.

What modifications should I do for my 1009?

How about getting it running? ;) I'm going to regret posting that. First, draining the tank. I have a tool which will make that easier. Then dropping the tank to clean out any dirt and check the sock for tears. Finally, blow out the fuel lines with compressed air. Then a few gallons of...

Engine won't turn up in RPM'S

Have you checked the fuel pump? This is driven off a lobe on the camshaft, old school style. If the fuel pump is good, the problem is in the injection pump. For you, a rebuilt swap would be in order, if you can figure out the pdf TMs. You know how to use DoD TMs, right?

    If you could do anything???

Air conditioning, noise, vibration and harshness suppression are the tops. Most have the floor pads and mats removed because the kick panel vents leak, causing rust on the floors. The issue with the kick panel vent leaks is easily fixed, remove the vent doors and find the cowl gutter, a...

    Working on the M37

Enjoy the cooler weather, it brought down allergens so I'm a bit under the weather. Still getting up to speed on how this system works. How about we shoot for tomorrow?

    Working on the M37

Service Bulletin 9-203 may be an issue here. This is the installation of commercial turn signal kit. I need to read more to see if this is the case.

    Working on the M37

Got it. TM 9-2330-212-20 from the site's resources, Figure 2-61. Looks like the light switch will have to be pulled and the two additional wires from the old wiring harness will have to be swapped into the new one. No biggie, these join the turn signal to the main. I'm going to take...

    Working on the M37

Now it IS both, although a little cool front has dropped the temperature. I want to trace the brake line pressure switch back to the light switch, then see if circuit 22 is energized. IIRC, there were two added wires to the 3 lever switch which had the newer rubber plugs instead of Douglass...

    Vehicle Security...Now you see it..now you don't...:)

Still have to worry about thieves with tow trucks. No, not all tow truck operators are thieves but a few thieves have tow trucks.

What modifications should I do for my 1009?

Paint on lining will not significantly reduce the interior noise. The 1009 has lots of "drum head" area of interior sheet metal, it takes mass to damp the lower frequencies. There are mats which will do far more, focus on rust prevention and then use the mats. Over the top, rubber floor mats...

    glow plug/votage gauge question

There is also field voltage. To make current, it takes voltage through the slip rings into the field and this voltage comes from the batteries. When started with glow plugs running, voltage depression can create a condition where the alternators are quite limited. Alternators are less RPM...
