The 30,000 BTU units can be started in "HI" according to the instructions I have, but there may be a problem with the 60,000 BTU ones.
"HI" will let more fuel in to soak the wick faster (the fan still runs in normal start speed), but the bigger units may present a fire/explosion hazard...
Welcome to the site akguy, my son was born in Naples.
In those days, the Alligator alley was 2-lane, so I image that there is a lot more people in Naples now...
Air in the fuel supply line is never good.
Some smoke is good, it means something is burning....:-)
How long do you keep the switch in "START" position? It may take up to 2 minutes before it runs on its own and when it starts, flip switch immediately to "RUN", any hesitation will stop the fuel...
The system that you have would probably be designated AN/VRC-43, however, check the PS magazine for the maintenance procedures for AN/VRC-12, which is similar and uploaded a few weeks ago.

Mike Pop found this somewhere in Colorado, it's one of very few units built (less than 20, I believe). It's the xm791 with a wind deflector added on, which was not standard.

Edit: Technically, the fuel burning...

The 8x8 should do okay with the two front axles and the 16 inch wide tires, a little more offroading will tell.
The original m656 bed and the xm757 5th...
The 818 has a lot of unsprung weight in the rear, probably close to 1,800 lb in the wheels/tires alone, which helps for traction. My 8x8 only has 750 lb in the wheels/tires in the rear. Just to be even with the 818, I'd have to add a couple of thousand pounds considering its lighter suspension...
Hi Bruce,
Got your email also....the project has been in limbo for a while since I haven't driven the trucks very much since the cross country trip.
About the valves, I decided on motorized valves for the 8x8 so that they stay open or closed if/when power is cut.
I'm leaning towards using...
I read you, Gimp. Putting cargo in the bed will make a big difference in traction, when driving in the snow and mud here, I always loaded up with several tree logs to get good traction. Doubling the load will double the traction regardless of tire tread and that's what I want to do for the...
