You are doing a remarkable job and I admire the creativity and craftsmanship that you and others share on this forum. Thanks for that!
And this comes from a guy who doesn' t really like to see these trucks chopped, bobbed and otherwise mutilated. For every dozen or so mutilations there seems to...
With your skill set as a firefighter, you should have
a) no trouble finding a job that pays well above minimum wage and is also something you'd like doing.
b) no trouble locating a Deuce with a realistic sale price
c) be able to afford b) through a whole lot less hours working a) than what...
So I finally mounted my medium tow bar. I looked at the previous threads on the topic and decided to put it onto the front bumper, in pieces, for ease of handling. I used Grade 8 threaded rods in place of two of the shackle bracket bolts and drilled one hole into the bumper support bracket.
So...
Good score. Was/is there any chance that you can hand a hundred bucks to one of the operators to remove the three road tractors and re-pile them after, if necessary? If you could get what you need off the wreck of the truck, it would be the easiest (and probably cheapest) route.
The truck looks nice - and I don't say that just because it looks just like mine did. I see some subtle signs that the truck was cared for at some point. Good paint, step added in front, star detail on bumper.
That's the good news. Your job is to find out if that impression is skin deep or...
Last weekend the excellent Merrickville, Ontario car show - for the first time - had MVs on display. I brought my deuce, my friend had his brand-new-to-him M816 and another local collector had brought a couple of M1008s and a mule.
The M816 ended up with empty batteries, after having spent the...
I ordered a 5 ton speedometer adapter from a vendor to compensate for my taller tires. Turns out, the two ends (speedometer cable and connection to the transfer case) on my deuce are "male" (male cable ends) , whereas the 5 ton part has a male and a female end.
I thought, ok, maybe I can swap...
Ahem...those are the same people that ram things with forklifts and bend driveshafts on otherwise running-condition vehicles, right?
It ain't their stuff, after all....
AFAIK, Continental owns the Austrian SEMPERIT tire company and that is probably where the tires were made. I'd be curious to know which application they were for and how they made their way to the CONUS.
The Austrian military does/did, to my knowledge, not use these tires in this dimension. The...
My truck came with new zippered boots from the military. They hold up fine and, given the quality issues with all types of replacement boots, I am not touching them until I absolutely have to.
Zippered boots seal well for normal use; you silicone the zipper after mounting; if you intend to ford...
The fuel could have been turned up or the fuel density compensator was bypassed and the fuel not turned down.
Two things to check....
A side effect of setting fuel injection quantities above what the TM prescribes is that the engine is less "soldier-resistant" and, when making full power...
Well done! I did a three-day recovery with my truck from Virginia and can re-live the thrill.
It is an excellent shakedown trip for the truck. Any light seepage will accumulate over three days straight of driving and you get a really good feel for the truck.
You can use the brass inserts for air lines; any truck stop should carry those. Consider replacing all the return lines, while you are at it, with truck air lines.
I would start with the usual culprits on the frame - check draglink, kingpin etc. for play. Wheel bearing play? Check alignment. Any wear marks on the tires? Front shocks dead?
Front tires could be whacko out of balance. It has happened that there is caked, rubbed-off tire material stuck on...
