    taillights stopped working

Time to trace the light green wire in circuit 24A. There are a few connections that might be corroded.

    STE/ICE diagnostic port, Atlanta area

It monitors fuel pressure in the filter housing, engine speed and alternator voltage. Nothing you cannot measure with simple tools. STE-ICE was a great idea but terrible implementation. It was the least used tool in the shop set, I never heard of it being used.

Mep003a Oil Leak between Flywheel Housing a Generator Assembly

Oil flow through the cooler is thermostatically controlled, you shouldn't have any meaningful flow when cold. The thermostat is under the filter housing. Check the crankcase breather, if this is obstructed, crankcase pressure can force oil out of the rear main seal.

m1009 dies if you let off the gas too quickly, thoughts?

Diesels regulate power AND engine speed by injected quantity. The injection pump has a governor which sets the RPM based on how far the accelerator pedal is depressed. Automotive diesels also vary the timing of the injection, adding to the complexity of the injection pump. Governors balance...

    Working on the M37

This was a fun day. We only had doors to sand, that was a bit dirty as there were layers of running, brush-applied paint and a few defects to feather. Sanding is the big work, spraying is downright fun in comparison. Especially when done in air conditioned comfort. Without fumes of...

    Working on the M37

It is going to be a great painting day. Why? Hurricane/tropical storm Isaac is far enough to the east it is wringing the humidity out of the air. Meaning less sweat and faster drying times on the paint. Yes, sweat was a problem a few times.

    Hydro Fluid

Most hydraulic oils contain anti-wear agents which will cause ash deposits. Compression ratio isn't an issue, heavier oils are usually easier to ignite, having a higher cetane index. The only reason an M35A2 has such a high compression ratio is to allow use of motor gasoline as a fuel...

    24 to 12 volt

That is what I said. Not hard to do with modern mobile electronics.

    Hydro Fluid

Skydrol and glycol hydraulic fluids will trash a diesel.

    24 to 12 volt

CUCVs other than M1010 and certain M1028s used a pair of 12 volt alternators. Meaning you can tap into either battery without worry about balance. Yes, you CAN tap into the top battery and get 12 volts, you just use the 12 volt positive for the negative and you have 12 volts! But if you...

    Working on the M37

That is the 15th. Should be easy to get it back together in two weeks plus three days.

Crank pulley play: how much is acceptable?

Video is private. Once you pull the pulley, you will see why it can run off center, it is bolted to the damper hub with 4 bolts. If you loosen the bolts with belt tension, it can pull the pulley off axis. Or, in other words, it can be slightly adjusted. The v-belt pulley is not part of the...

Bringing the M1031 into 21st century...backup cam and cupholders

Got the camera mounted, high and above the center marker light. A little relief on the back of the light housing provided space to route the cable, then it follows the wire for the lights to the front of the box. There is a hole in the floor here for a radio rack, it then goes to the existing...

    Block Heater/Warmer

Zerostart makes a pump type which works well in these larger engines. I have a Frost Heater on my small diesel, it is a rebranded Zerostart.

    Block Heater/Warmer

500 watts will run about $0.06 per hour. Most electric utilities charge about $0.12 per kilowatt-hour. 500 watts will keep the engine warm in your climate. I would recommend a coolant heater installed in the heater lines. Some have pumps, others use thermosiphon. Either way, they won't...

Gen 2 no charge when hot

Heat kills semiconductors, the diodes and regulator will die early deaths from heat. Some Audi vehicles had fresh air ducts to prevent heat soak, You might try something like this, ducting air from the radiator core support knock-out to behind the alternators.

    Electrical Ideas

Alternator rebuilding kits are inexpensive. Having 100 amperes of 28 volts IS useful. For instance, you can run a 2.3 kW inverter off 24 volt using 4 AWG wire and still have power left over to run the truck. I understand the need for air conditioning yet I didn't want to fool with the...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I used the compressor on the back to run a dual action sander. For about 30 seconds aua. Yes, it really is about 5 CFM, even when the pressure switch is tweaked to 120 PSI. It will work for an impact wrench. Won't for something air hungry. Yes, it was for working on a FMV. Sanding is...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Finally did the Doghead starter solenoid modification. It works so I think it was done right but didn't have any wiring diagram to check. The original solenoid has a shunt diode on the solenoid coil, don't know if the new one has it.

Poll - Who has done the Doghead Relay Conversion

I have the relay on hand, just haven't gotten around to it. Plus I've run out of 10-12 AWG eyes. OK, got it done TODAY. I took the original one apart and it has the freewheeling diode. This prevents arcing on the ignition switch since there is reverse current when the solenoid deactivates...
