Baxter,
could you share a few tips for the head gasket job, seeing it is fresh on your mind? You already mentioned the 7/8 O2 sensor socket...anything about procedure, how you did it, what worked and what gave you grief?
Well...at least carefully inspected. If, for example, your truck was apparently not exposed to road salt in a manner that caused corrosion everywhere, the steel brake lines can be in perfect shape. I'd replace the rubber flex lines, for peace of mind. On the other hand, if you find one badly...
You cannot be too careful or take anything for granted. I replaced all wheel cylinders, flex lines and brake shoes. Two months later and I just saw wetness on the inside of the left front tire..coming from the drain hole in the brake drum. Wanna bet it is a leaking brand new wheel cylinder?
Nice find! I always liked the proportions of the M342; it is on the short wheel base chassis.
There was somebody on here a few weeks back who had troop seats for it and wanted to sell them.
This is so true! I have a Volkswagen TDI and added a coolant heater. It does exactly that. The clamps have to be ape-tight or the hose will not cope with the extreme temperature swings.
I have a 1974 US M35A2C with winch. Softtop (brand new) and singled out (still on 9.00-20....for the time being).
It is registered and has ON plates.
I am a stickler for safety and replaced all flex hoses, brake cylinders and service brake shoes. Rust free truck, never seen salt, steel lines...
Congratulations to a nice looking deuce! You have a few advantages that many others do not have - such as a father that was an MV mechanic and access to active duty personnel that works (worked) on them. That alone can be invaluable.
Have fun with your new truck!
It has been a long while since I have driven a non-winch truck, so I will not speak to that.
The winch does add front axle weight; on a w/w truck, the front axle will be significantly closer to its rated weight when empty, compared to a wo/w truck.
An empty w/w truck may therefore have more...
Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I had hoped that it would not point to the head gasket. Oh, well.
No oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil, just a little mess. Maybe I get a little more time out of it. It is parked for the winter anyway.
It is easy to get a little discouraged...
When driving for a prolonged time, especially at highway speeds, I have oil leaking from what appears to be somewhere in the front upper region of the engine. When you open the hood, the front inner part of the hood is oily; it looks fan-blown, but I am not sure if the oil seeps out somewhere in...
This site feeds all sorts of MV addictions, so wanting to know specs by heart is an easy one. Just go to "Resources" - "Technical Manuals" (see the bar on top, under the steel soldiers logo) and pick the TM9-2320-209 series of manuals! -20 and -34 have a lot and there is an engine specific one...
Check the data plates on the passenger side dashboard. The weights and measurements plate should say M35A2C w/w. On the plate with all the stamped numbers search for the NSN (national stock number); if it is a factory original dropside with winch, the NSN will end in 0875.
If so, offer $2k and...
I could not determine whether the parking brake was actually working when I applied it at approx 30 km/h (18 mph) to test if it would be of any use in an emergency. However, it does hold the stopped truck very well.
As a relatively new Deuce owner I chime in. Sit down and make a list, for yourself, what you want in your truck.
Split brakes a must? Winch? Power steering? Heater? Hard top? Dropside? Already singled out? 11.00-20 Michelin XLs on it? Just overhauled, with new seals and axle boots? Make the...
Yes, I have a picture!
I took a whole day off to get it accomplished. Safety tested in the morning - no problem . She passed with flying colours. Right after, the flasher module started quitting and the (new) hand brake cable broke. Good timing!
The licensing office (Ontario MTO) was...
