The fuel burning coolant heater is thermostatically controlled between 120 and 175°F. It automatically switches between "HI" and "LO" to keep the coolant within that range....
For an electric heater, I'd use a simple timer.
A couple of things, "pretty hot" is a relative term, 150 to 175°F is not a problem and use it only for 1/2 hour to an hour, so that you don't build up condensation from any water present, which could cause corrosive problems throughout the engine in the long run.
There is a section on this system in the PS magazine section (still old site):

The purpose of the primary filter is to make life easy for the secondary and final filters. It traps water and large particles and yes, it's cleanble if you use the one specified by the military.
The ultimate primary filter may be the "scraper" type shown in the image below, it's rated for the...
Also, to go back to the control box, I had one for a model 978 a year ago (Mike Pop ended up with it) and as I remember, there was no connector on the back, so wiring may be different.
Wow Lee, even problems with the 1/2 " impact? I can use my 3/4 impact from either connection and the only "problem" is the reservoir size, the air runs down pretty quick, but plenty to loosen lug nuts, pretty useless for spray guns or grinders, though.
The glad hands are the same as used on...
It may be a good deal if you want a nice model 978, but if you want a fuel burning heater, I would suggest the SW South Wind 10530A24, which you should be able to get for $100 or so (check with sermis in TX) and it will run on gasoline and/or diesel.
Remember that you will also need the fuel...
The 978 is gasoline only. The later model South Wind heaters have improved mixing of air and fuel and will burn diesel, both #1 and #2.....
The control box appears to be a later model one.
The opening in the case is actually not threaded, the spring inside positions the rod as you turn the adjusting nut.
Rod moves in: Decrease fuel
Rod moves out: Increase fuel
Difference between setting for gasoline and DF2 is about 1/10 inch movement of the rod, which is about 2 full turns of...
It's not only how high, but how far from the base of the crane, the reach....wreckers and K-booms too for that matter may be able to lift 8,000 lb, but not at any extensive reach.
