Tale tale signs of bearing failure

Since wear metal analysis was mentioned and most labs charge $20 per test, I was wondering if there would be an opportunity for a discount wear metal analysis program? How much would you be willing to spend on such an analysis? It would be beneficial to test every few thousand miles to...

    Deuce Fuel

Synthetics burn just fine. It is silicone oil that won't burn properly. I would recommend diluting all motor oil with at least 50% kerosene or diesel because the increased viscosity puts a much greater load on the injector pump.

    Injector Seals

The copper washers? They should be standard Bosch. Do you know the OD of the nozzle and thickness of the old gaskets? They are probably the same as the Dodge Cummins or VW TDIs which use Bosch injectors/pumps. If you are in a hurry, you can flat sand both sides, then heat them to glowing to...

    Deuce Fuel

The same dye used to denote off-road fuel is used to dye transmission fluid.

    Deuce Fuel

One thing to remember is putting non-taxed, off-road diesel in the tank is intentional tax evasion. And if you are running 100% ATF that is dyed red, they cannot tell the difference. But if they dip the tank and find a witch's brew of used motor oil and diesel, they aren't likely to have...

    How difficult to swap turbos?

No, the air/fuel ratio is almost always far lean in the diesel engine. Turning up the fuel adjusts the governor so more fuel can be injected. It does not increase the RPM of the engine but rather adjusts the feedback control of the governor...little governor understanding would be great here...

Soft brake pedal when not running?

I have a little battery powered inflator which weighs about 5 pounds. I used it to pressurize the master cylinder to about 10 PSI (regulator from Home Depot, 1/8 and 1/4 NPT fittings, 1/4" poly tube) which forced brake fluid into the wheel cylinders, making the brakes effective. Why does this...

    Deuce Steering & Clutch concerns

The steering issue could be steering box adjustment. It is covered in the -20 level, chapter 15

    Deuce Steering & Clutch concerns

It would take failure of the filters for dirty fuel to cause control problems. Because the control collar which controls all the fuel is constantly slipping over the piston which delivers the fuel, it is impossible for it to stick.

    Deuce Fuel

E-85 has too high AKI (anti-knock index, AKA "octant"). Why is this bad? Ignition. High octane index means it won't auto-ignite easily. Ethanol increases the AKI beyond that listed on the pump. In a diesel (the multifuel IS a diesel with extra-high compression ratio), the air is compressed...

    Two Deuces Down--Hydrostatic Lock?

First check batteries and connections. Then measure voltage at the batteries as you try to start. I am betting ground connection is bad, take off and clean, behind battery box.

    Two Deuces Down--Hydrostatic Lock?

do not do that unless the engine kill is pulled!

    m35a2c clogged fuel system

Won't help here. The control collar adjusting mechanism is the ONLY seal between diesel at 60 PSI and engine oil. It is a precise fit, once it is dirty to the point of sticking the governor, fuel will not get in between. The material that causes the sticking is oxidized diesel varnish...

packing pellets in my new turbo...

Oh, it is easy. Polystyrene are usually "S" shaped or tubular in a figure 8 cross section, cut on the bias. But starch ones are cylindrical, like a Cheeto, except with square ends.

    m35a2c clogged fuel system

When I'm not hunting, sure. You got a project? I got a few tools:wink:.

    m35a2c clogged fuel system

I have recently written up my repair with a few photos. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/deuce/41122-injection-pump-repair.html It is a real easy fiv. If unsure, just take pictures before taking it apart.

What is this next to oil filters??

Just open the petcock with a jug to collect the nasty stuff and drain until it runs clean. Is this a recent depot overhauled engine? Toole Army Depot was really proud of slapping stickers on the engine, a fresh coat of CARC on the engine is a good sign of a depot overhaul. If this is the...

What is this next to oil filters??

The petcock is for purging the air from the cooling system. Oil in there would be BAD, check the radiator. I would recommend draining that nasty black goo from the coolant side. Oil samples for the AOAP were ALWAYS taken from the dipstick tube, a length of 1/4" translucent poly tube, the vamp...

    Injector specs

I would HOPE they would hold a few hundred PSI without leakdown and have a pop-off pressure of 2500, that isn't hard. But making them last several thousand miles? Bosio knows how to improve Bosch injectors. The machining is the same for hydraulic heads, don't know if they make them.

WTF is this from the turbo?

Like any new, proud "parent", Tex is just a little concerned. Remember, the turbo "seal" leaks oil back to the crankcase, because the exhaust and intake pressures are higher than crankcase pressure, there isn't much oil leakage possible UNLESS the turbo oil drain becomes clogged.
