Cheers PJ. Hmmm, interesting. The Australian M816s are all listed as Kaiser Jeeps, they were procured in '73 I think..
Ill try to get pic of my AM General 'round holes' later.
Just did a search and found no threads that question any slight differences in the manufacture of 5 tons between Kaiser-Jeep and AM General. I am sure they had the exact same specs and drawings, but there are always slight manufacturing differences and liberties that are taken - call it...
Whilst doing research into the Australian Armys M816's, I came across a few that had been canabalised and mounted on a civi truck chassis as well as just civi use of the whole truck. Not sure if the cranes are 816 or 543's though.
and yes - the first one has been put on a 'flat pack' for...
Cheers. Overhead is not my strong suit!
Nope - there is some exposed steel (I impatiently moved one of the screw/handles - wiping off some damp primer), the lunette tube is 3" galv (suitably ground for the weld) and some of the primer was a black'ish....
Holleybone mounted. (Towbar)
Have pics to show me lunette end, but...
I had to self engineer the feet end, angled to allow for feet coming out past lip on body.
Both brackets will be yellow. Adds 3" to overall width of body, but still narrower than mirrors. Also I am not sure if I want...
SLO - I tried posting the pics you wanted but they won't load - so have a look at the thread on the G503 forum where I have put all the research pics and had responses from overseas folk who are/were "in the know"...

Has anyone checked into any exceptions to any of these requirements - namely for Farmers? In NY there are CDL and taxation exemptions ... Just a thought (if it helps in your particular situation)
Extended floor piece welded in. New bottle 'buckets' (?) need to be fab'd. Won't be using the original ones as they are too big a diameter. Replacements were segmented on a sheet brake rather than rolled.
Passenger side holder cut out.
This will make it real easy to access the spare and...
It is a simple ~2" square tube with corresponding 'inner' and a captive nut with 'T' headed bolt. It is welded to the bulkhead and the spare tyre support bracket. At the top, the fixed tube is also tied into the trailer board stowage 'goal post'.
I'll try to get some pics off of the other...
Yes - adjustable in width so that lights are always on extremities of casualty. I'll try and find a pic.... look at this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzV3Z8ScIhQ at 51 secs, it's the Mack wrecker that replaced the M816.
Welding in the front bulkhead would require cab removal...
Yup - that's the plan. I am progressing a full conversion of a US issue M816 to how the Australian army modified their 29.
However because of the two longitudinal ribs in the wrecker body, over the chassis rails - the center space, directly under the spare tyre would only be accessible by...
Found a nasty little dirt trap...
So - whilst prepping the next mod in the RAEME conversion, I found the space/shelf behind the Oxy tank and under the spare wheel tray, was just packed with all kinds of damp dust, road grime and nothing in there was painted - kind of blocked in during original...
Finally got to move wrecker into shop for the winter. Had to jump start it off of the Freightliner but I did not have or couldn't find my NATO to older US 2 pin adapter, so I modded a NATO slave cable that I had which only had a plug on one end. Used a couple of long pieces of 10mm threaded rod...
This setup is used extensively in old Europe - years ago it was more common than semi's. Appropriate tow vehicle, generally with it's own load, is a must.
We do our own hay and I am currently up to reversing this type of wagon, behind the baler - 3 steerable pivot points. Next will be two hay...
D@mn - my A1 is pushing 2200 at an indicated 60!!
BTW - when you get time, any chance you can pull the winch control tower cover and ID the left valve with pics??? I need to add the wetline to mine. Cheers!
Baby wrecker gets an airing..
After a few years collecting dust in the barn, I got my Airbourne 1 tonne wrecker (Land Rover 101) running and out for a play at our annual Guy Fawkes Land Rover Event (FB).
