I actually saw one in use in a logistics point in RVN 50 years ago. I guess if you had to move heavy objects and were not authorized to have a forklift then that is what you got.
Don't forget to read the reading: operators' manual, organizational maintenance manual, parts book, and lubrication order. There are somewhat more grease points on a military hummer compared to a civilian edition, neglect them at your own peril. Then TMs are available in the TM section on this...
Think about checking the flange bolts at each end of all 4 driveshafts. Loose flange bolts falling out will ruin your day. The biggest troublemaker on the truck is usually the shaft between the transmission and the transfer case.
The plugs are called dust covers and are available from truck parts suppliers individually or in bulk. Their use is encouraged to prevent corrosion in thye brake chamber if rain and road debris is allowed to enter. Get them in the same place you buy your caging pin assemblies.
Lubrication is the key to successful operation. Many telescoping landing legs as used to fifth wheel trailers have zerk fittings to lubricate the bushing therein. GAA is the lubricating agent usually called for. What does your LO say ?
Caging pins will be required to tow a vehicle when it is impossible to supply air from the towing vehicle to keep the emergency brake released. Dual service brake chambers are found on drive and trailer axles. They are not usually found on steering axles as the designer doesn't want the driver...
Obviously you have to insure that a caging pin assembly for each dual service brake chamber is present. It is not uncommon to get a vehicle through DRMO/GovPlanet with this component missing. There is a place to stow the pin on the side of the brake chamber it serves. A 3/4" box wrench is...
A popular post military use for M 123s was as a platform to convert a tractor into a quarry truck with a rock body ala Euclid. Being over width and such was not a problem running from the shovel to the crusher on a quarry's haul roads.
The CDL airbrake inspection from which the pressure standards come from is started with the air pressure up, the engine off and the battery switch on. It is a test to detect leakage so it should not be conducted in a noisy area. When the parking brake is initially released or the service brake...
The applicable standard for a straight truck is 2 pounds per minute with an air operated parking brake released and 3 pounds per minute with service brake applied. Any audible air leak likely will exceed the standard. Add 1 pound/min for a trailer truck. How you are supposed to measure a 3 pound...
As suggested in post 7 an airbraked truck can loose all its air in a couple of hours and be legal Fire Departments and such interested in fast response times plumb a shoreline in the maintain air pressure when the vehicle is in quarters and shut off. The biggie is how fast air leaks off when the...
The biggest secret in the United States Army is its publications system. They have manuals for everything. You have no idea how much military equipment is lost from untrained personnel with unauthorized tools and parts trying to repair it.
The TM also explains how the 2 way tailgate works and how to arrange the chains to limit the swing of the gate so you can restrict how far it opens which allows you to spread material with the truck rather than dump it in a pile and use another machine to do it.
M49Cs had the pioneer rack mounted on the side of the body. My M817 had the pioneer rack mounted on an angle on top of the tool box on the left side behind the cab opposite the spare tire. M 818s have been seen with the pioneer rack either mounted horizontally on top of the tool box behind the...
The Army itself started buying M35 "eager beaver" deuces with 6 wheels. Similar buy was the M 135 GMC. However the 6 wheel design proved to be less than stable and the trucks were then purchased with 10 wheels plus spare. Forward 40 years and towards the end of the M35 era in reserve components...
The problem will be to get budd style stud or lug centered wheels. Almost every new truck these days comes with hub centered wheels and they do not interchange with the older stud centered variety. Check salvage yards, the supplies are drying up. I had to get an aluminum budd wheel for my civi...
