As far as the driveline is concerned - these are cross country vehicles - not designed/intended to be driven on road (very far).
Frequent inspection and measurement of tyre diameters and subsequent rematching/replacement is required - there are no differentials in the transmission - all wheels...
Well hopefully your neighbour will have learnt a lesson so you won't have to acquire spades for the next time!
Will you be putting a little backhoe silhouette on the side of your door a-la WWII fighters and bombers?????
For intended purpose of OP, that is what the truck was designed for - light equipment (which is military speak for 'everything except M88/M1A1 tanks!)
Points to consider:
You will need a military trailer ie., M870, otherwise you'll have to add ~14" to the RGN and change the Kingpin from 2" to...
He also was selling Unimogs and a couple of old Land Rovers a while back, a few 5 tons (800's and 900's) and some Deuces and CUCVs too. Even a Huey shell I think.
He has another place further West where he also has an 816 and he intends to consolidate everything to Grand Gorge but as...
MK 15 rear 'A' frame is a kind of a goofey arrangement ... I am sure you can improve on the chain stays so as not to worry about it interfering while using the crane at the same time or your container by looking at the HEMTT wreckers stinger setup and make the frame/fairlead support a permanent...
First pic - GS with Mortar fit (only ones to get triple Jerry can holder instead of winch).
Second pic - radio body with ac unit on roof. This would probably interfere with the masts (if vehicle was 'radio' rather than REME repair van etc.,) so may have been a civi mod for camping in that...
Yeah, Les is a great guy. I've known him for many years...
As far as the tan goes - pretty sure it's going to be authentic and in Bob Morrisons book - Land Rovers in the Gulf, there are no pics of any with the "triangle" or inverted chevron..... I think that came later (second Gulf war) and...
This is a nice mod, though I think I may have gone with rounded/smooth treads, certainly for the top one - potential hand grips maybe (subject to owners stature!).
NB A2's went to some kind of slotted ladder setup on the gooseneck. A2 pic added at bottom of post.
They'll look great once...
Seeing as no one got it..... That colour is known as Eau de Nil (translates from French as 'Water of the Nile'). This paint was used for rebuilt engines/transmissions. If the vehicle had it's original engine, it would be unpainted (block is aluminium) with gloss black plumbing/electrics etc...
Which is ok if the civi truck has a stout front bumper/frame rail ends....
Discussed at length - with pics, somewhere in these:
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?81781-Wrecker-wishlist-of-mods&highlight=wrecker+wishlist...
Can't find the thread discussing various spade mounts from maybe a year ago, but here is pic that I posted of the ones I made for mine. No wrench reqd, but not lockable either...
Valence. Welcome to the big bad world of wrecker restorers..
I think you are starting out ahead of the curve - I would much rather have your situation of civi neglect than civi butchery if your destination is a good example of a military 816. So many were bought and civilianised by amateur...
Hey Jeff - Bjorn hit it on the head, reach rather than height, though it was pretty tight, fortunately the trucks front wheels were 6" lower than the rear so I just had enough height. Though all I would have to do would be to move the cable clips up a bit or wind up the nuts on the silo strap...
Well..... Had to build this as there is no one to assist and therefore no-one to stand underneath or be a "close watcher"!
Tether was critical for placing in the truss clip, all from the back of the truck.
Final design was braced just like one of the twin booms on a Holmes 750. Worked like...
Finally got to throw up a few of the trusses on the shed that will house the 816 for it's tidy up this winter.
Last week I lifted the four 10x10 posts and beam which is the support for the outside wall/truss tails.
Got "This Video is Private" when I tried to view it... Not sure what that means re your upload etc.
Glad you are getting work for the old girl, makes it all worth while!
Jeepsinker - you are welcome, I actually enjoy all the picture manipulation and diagram stuff.
OK - in pic 5 and 6 of last post (#10), that is still a large recess where the washer (and nut that should be there) is, to hold water and it's below the drain holes... I am thinking about filling...
Reassembly time
Finally got the new pivot shaft bearing, however no available pivot shaft so I had to improvise...
Bearing was a SJ7174 from Fastenall. Came to around $28 with shipping from BFE - took so dang long.
Dims if that reference isn't any help: 7/8" ID, 1 3/8" OD x 1" long.
I...
