The regs may differ base to base so the best bet is to call the base/station MPs/PMO/Security Office to find out (Google is your friend). The policy for the base I work aboard is that you have to submit paperwork similar to a visit request to bring a POW (Personally Owned Weapon) aboard the...
Worked my 817 yesterday -- ran 5 loads of horse manure from a neighbor farm for my compost production. Had to park one side in a ditch to be able to load with the dinky compact tractor (42 hp Massey) but we got 'er done! Great truck for working soft barn yards. After, the washdown in...
Was junkyarding yesterday in rural Virginia and came across this Unknown Soldier. I have no idea what it is. Had a pickup type bed on the back (looked original to the vehicle and not a later mod). Had a flathead 4-cylinder (head was long-gone). Axles are buried in the dirt but it appears the...
Lots of speculation and not a lot of top level guidance at the moment. At least in the DoN, "Transportation" and "Travel" are different things, funding wise and should not be confused. Moving surplus vehicles to a collection/deaccessing site seems a justifiable end-of-lifecycle O&M cost to me...
For me, now that I've passed the Mid Century mark, I've had to admit to myself that if I want to stay active with my farming and large old trucks, I had to stop taking my body (and fitness) for granted. I've put down the beers and started doing a daily 60-minute workout on the rowing machine...
Hey Roman -- Me too! Seems like the current Maryland events are located too far north. I'd be interested in anything AA County and south ...
Southern MD anyone?
Here's our 817. 1st pic shows us bringing her home from Ft Meade. 2nd one is all cleaned up for the Leonardtown (MD) Veterans' Day Parade. Last two are working around the farm (what we bought her for ... ;) no toys here, even the antiques have to earn their keep). Last shot shows her with...
I guess it depends on how far and how dead the 5-ton is. You might try Tauber's Towing in Linthicum (Google them) I think his name is Mike (?). I've never dealt with him and don't know much about him other than he has a gorgeous '44 Ward LaFrance wrecker (so he's an MV guy, too) and really...
This morning in the fog .... Our '71 M817, formerly of the Maryland National Guard ...

Clinto -- But that's the natural evolution of the hobby, thanks to the greater awareness the Internet has brought to it. Used to be that if you couldn't get to a DRMO lot in person for a live spot bid auction, or know the drill for the sealed bids, you didn't do surplus. Most people only ever...
Great thread -- I, too, have a really clean (well, not at the moment ... ;) ) 817 that obviously had something done to it before it went to DRMO. And it has round tags with codes stamped on them hanging from various components which I suspect denotes a rework or mod of some kind.
Mine's...
That info is out of date. Thanks to the efforts of the Maryland Motor Truck Association, the American Truck Historical Society and SEMA, that legislation was defeated. Doesn't mean they won't try again some day so we need to stay vigilant. Also, we need to be sure we aren't making it hard on...
Devildog -- I can't help you with your issue (I sure hope it works out well), but I am new here myself and have recently acquired a 5-ton (817) that I have been working the snot out of and having big fun doing so...
