From what I have been told there is no maintenance of the breather. It is not a problem unless it is busted like mine was. I think you statement "isn't bothered with" is accurate.
New breather installed... one of the cheapest parts I have put on my truck ($13)....
The old patched cap goes into the spare parts box for one of "just in case" situations.
I noticed the wet tank would run out of air and yet the primary and secondary had air. I used the suggested soapy water spray and found this part leaking.
In the pneumatic diagram I see a manual valve, a low pressure switch and a pressure protection valve connected to the wet tank.

Had some oil drops on the ground after the 2+ hour ride to the Rally. A friend, Robert was able to locate the source of the leak - a busted engine breather. The crack was on the back side so you could not see it from the ground. Thanks Robert!
