If you're looking to stash batteries in a tight locaton, checkout those little dry cell racing batteries. The brand name used to be panther, but I think they changed it to odyssey.
I had one that got passed between several civie cars and trucks until it finally died about 15 years later...
Unless the bed is loaded, or you like to jerk the crane around, the corner stake pockets hold up fine. (most of the time) I don't have a pic or the proper terminology, but use the big curved hooks, not the kind that grab a chain link.
Jeepers and rock crawlers do it all the time. I met a guy that put 5 ton rockwells under a cj and forgot to reinforce the frame. His friends still laugh at him because he tacoed the thing when he slammed on the brakes!

Whether you're looking for a flat paint job, or a glossy coat, you'll still have to sand it down to get your new paint to stick.
I don't have a problem with the color, buy do yourself a favor. Don't lean against it in the summer. OUCH!!!
