MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Well I hooked up a set of heavy jumper cables from the CUCV to the 002a Fuel system finally bled and have fuel coming out of IP fittings including up at the injectors. So far no go. She cranks fine and has good oil pressure but so far nothing. Not even smoke. Fuel shutoff solenoid is working and...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I went ahead and drained the oil from the pan and filter canister. Oils cheap (compared to engine) and that oil has been in there for years. Will leave filter on there for now. I will do a complete change after/when she runs. She’s almost ready. Making up a connection cable for in between the...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Installed new Fuel hose from IP to check valve. It’s a Cummins part number and included in the pics if anyone needs one. It’s for a 003A I think but works. Also installed new oil pressure gauge. Original one had water and rust inside. Installed clean fuel tank and is hooked up again. 2 pin...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Already done and surprisingly no water came out. I was fully expecting it. Did both the pan drain and canister drain. Obviously it needs changed now but would prefer to do so when oil is hot. I didn’t buy extra fuel and oil filters since if it runs, I will be doing the spin on adapter...

What items do you carry in your truck?

I rarely go outside of a 50 mile radius with mine. If I break down, help is a phone call away. CB radio will get installed someday. Only off road stuff is typical ranch work. I just carry tire change stuff, chain, hay bale wire and tow strap, bungee cords and first aid kit and my trusty Pow...

Do you drive your CUCV in the winter salt?

Down in Corpus Christi, TX you can drive on the beach. Sure it’s fun and such, but you’re driving in salty sand and occasionally water. The ocean spray leaves a film of salt on everything!!! The car washes there have spray systems you drive over and stop while it washes the underside of your...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I’m ready to hear it run, but I’m not rushing. Don’t want to miss a step anywhere.

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Lots of busy work today. Took off the battery cables and cleaned the contacts and added fresh shrink sleeve to the ends. Also removed the fan shroud and exhaust shroud/flaps. Removed more mud dauber nest and blew everything off with the air hose. Used air to blow out the oil cooler. Then used...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Filters arrived today. Cleaned the canister bolts and sealed the top bolt. The “rust stained” filter base turned out to be anodized that color. The copper washers look to be a special shape washer. I didn’t have new ones so I heated them up and annealed them. New canister gaskets were...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I did take that cover off earlier and it was full of mud dauber nest. Removed all of those and blew out the whole thing with an air hose. No nest or critter damage that I could see. I am glad to hear that I can spray that huge switch cylinder down with WD40 or equivalent. Good to know It does...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

The panel mount ones, like the original, I can fine, but not in the correct amperage The Nut mount ones I can easily find but do not want to do that unless I have to. The other 7 1/2 amp breaker on the gauge panel is fine and easily found.

Help I got MEP-itis... It all started with just one

My 002A isn’t even running yet, but I’m on the lookout for another. First it was 5 tons, then CUCVs, trailers, now MEPs….. I feel your pain.

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Already done. She’s soaking on SeaFoam. While I had the glow plugs out, I used a bore scope to look inside. No rust or damage that I could see. Managed to break the 15A convenience receptacle circuit breaker. It was frozen and when I pulled hard on it, the black tip busted. Didn’t come off but...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I also removed the glow plugs and manifold heaters. Used a Fluke Multimeter and checked the ohms. Not sure exactly what they should read but none were open circuit. If I had the fuel filters and battery's I would have tried to start it.

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Ah Yes It did have a metal oring I was going by the schematic and didn’t see it there. I will place it back and remove that copper washer. When I removed the gunk, obviously I couldn’t get it to stay in place for reassembly. So I used a touch of grease on the sides only and it stayed put. The...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Ok Good news. Removed cap nut, which was missing the copper washer, and the fuel that came out smelled fresh. Removed valve holder, spring and valve. Rotated engine and plunger was spinning but not plunging. Sprayed carb cleaner inside and rotated engine, spraying more as I went. let it sit for...
