Bought this gem from a GP/IP auction. Cheapest I’ve seen was on eBay for $799. I paid about $545 with shipping. Ya just never know when you’re gonna need one!
Changed to engine oil & filter. I must have looked at the wrong TM. This thing guzzled 27 quarts! I was expected 21 to 22. Had to run to the store to buy 6 more quarts.
Did a (somewhat) more thorough undercarriage & general inspection. Found a bad exhaust clamp & ordered on from eBay...
Took a short cruise for an ice cream cone. Got lots of quizzical looks and many more thumbs up. Might need to think about installing a low-keyed but funny auxiliary horn. Took the long way home checking out the scenery.

Unless you plan to use this for things way above its pay grade, the drivetrain should be fine.
Have you found a direct bolt up engine or will you need an adapter plate? Are there any special considerations for air compressor, pwr strng, generator/alternator, engine mounts, trans adapter...
Roll your sleeves up a bit more and troubleshoot before throwing money at the problem.

I had no idea there was a drain hole there. On a M998 family I don’t recall any water gathering in there. If there was it would have been coolant. How does water get in there? Flung up from the tires when driving in wet surfaces???
I would bet you have a short; crossed wires or unintentional ground.
My first inclination is to do a painstaking visual inspection of the harness. I’ve found that harness problems are most often at one end of the other and a close examination could easily find the problem.

Have you checked to see what your options will cost in comparison? For example;
Resleeve / new cylinder liner (and bore & hone & run bigger pistons if the undamaged other bore is too worn).
If the crank needs turned down or replaced?
Full gasket set, new rod & crank bearings, oil pump...
