Hoping someone can inspect a lot for me at Travis AFB near Fairfield CA before 11/13. If you can help, pls let me know. Unfortunately I will be in FL until then and cannot inspect it myself.
X3 on replacement post. Cheap and available from your local box auto parts store. If you are not able to direct-replace the top post be sure to completely remove it so no additional danger of a future short.
Not exactly bare bones: pyro w/fuel turned up; added a full 12v system with civvy hitch/hookups and trailer brake; coolant filter; swapped to a 'D' turbo; and currently working on full hydraulic PS. So quite a few mod's, but nothing flashy. Yet.
Axle turns smoothly and freely. I adjusted the bearing pre-load per the TM with no troubles at all. It definitely did not feel like the axle was binding on the spindle, just required quite a bit of force to seat the spindle all the way. Thinking of it that way makes me feel quite a bit...
I got the knuckle all buttoned up today, and am left with only one nagging doubt - hopefully someone can put it to rest for me.
When I put the spindle back on it didn't seat fully by hand, I had to draw it up snug with the bolts. I know it has a metal lip that has to slide inside the knuckle...
I am going to smear some axle grease on mine, but I don't believe it requires any regular lubrication. Think of it like the pilot bushing for the tranny, also made of bronze and it doesn't require any regular oil or grease.
Hmmmm, good question. Like an idiot I didn't check the bushing for fit on the axle, but it was a perfect light force-fit inside the spindle. I definitely had some wear on my old bushing though.
Then I cleaned, checked and re-packed the wheel bearing that sits on the spindle. About that time the fat lady sings came out to the garage and made a few not family-friendly comments about what my hands made it look like I had been doing (I was packing a bearing - she had just finished...
I took the flap disc to the rough axle thrust washer and seal retainer. Ultimately it didn't get them as smooth as I would have liked, so after some research I ordered new take-out parts from Red River in TX. Their prices were hands-down the best I could find. I asked for good take-out, and...
Dangit, would have liked to have seen that one.
If your oil is clean, it's unlikely your HG or oil cooler are bad. Make sure you completely drain all your fuel and replace all your filters. If it was that deep fuel and air filters and lines seem like the most likely candidates
This is dead on. I have a bobbed deuce that comes in ~9500lbs. I drive it on a regular class C and am legal. I registered it historical and saved a ton of cash. Historic registration has NO impact on the type of license required.
I have always kind of struggled to get this knuckle buttoned up correctly (the outer spindle has been a bit tough to get to bolt down properly) and I just realized there are 2 thrust washers on the axle (always seemed like a part of the axle to me.) Are those side-specific? I.e. one on the...
