I used the measurements Gerhard provided and scribed a mark measuring back 8 3/16" from the center of the front spring hanger and up 3 2/3" from the bottom of the frame. I punched it and drilled it out with a 3 5/8" hole saw I got from Home Depot. The Ross HF54 doesn't sit flush with the frame...
So about a month ago I finally parked the truck in the driveway, and started taking everything apart. It was a surprisingly quick take-down; flasher off, disconnected the lights, and removed the fender. I had the truck parked on a slight slope on gravel, so I wasnt comfortable taking off the...
I ordered a used 5-ton MF pump from kublos with the adapter attached. Ken is one of my favorite people to buy from - he's always straight up and has good prices. It's a bummer being on the opposite side of the country from him though.
He said he had a take-off pump and adapter that he would...
About a year ago I ordered a used 4-port Ross HF54 PS gear from Van DerHaags in Des Moines Iowa. I wanted 4-port in case I ever decided to install a steering ram. I think thats unlikely, but if it ever happens I want the option. There was no additional cost for the 4-port vs the 2, and Van...
I have been researching and preparing to install PS in my deuce for a while, so I know there are many, many threads covering it. Some of which are very good, but it seemed that my particular experience was a bit unique, so I thought it might be worth it to share how I tackled it for my truck...
Congrat's on a happy ending. I love it when a plan comes together. I think you did the right thing waiting and doing the job all the way. I'm probably close to 2yrs now since I did mine, and its working great still.
I remember on mine when I reassembled I questioned my sanity for a bit...
I am installing power steering in the deuce, a la the gringeltaube method. I have searched, but cant seem to find any info in the 5-ton section on if the 8XX series steering column is collapsible. Are any of the 5-tons columns collapsible, and which ones have splined ends? Trying to cast as...
Sorry for your loss. I am a father to five myself, and cant imagine losing one of my children. The reality is you will get more for the collection by parting it out than if you sell it complete. You're also more likely to get buyers for individual components than for the entire lot. If you do...
Those seem to be big pieces to be going very far in the engine. I would suspect something dropped in the head during the last servicing that fell down the oil galleys (maybe got broken up banging around the valves in the head?) I drained my oil and played the 'what is this?' mystery metal game...
Bienvenidos de California. I made that same drive when I bought my deuce a couple of years ago. I picked it up from Hill AFB in Ogden and drove home to Sacramento, CA. It was a LOOOOOONG drive, but a good one for the deuce - just get behind the wheel and roll across NV. Enjoy your truck.
Replace ALL the gaskets while you're in there. Its also a good idea since you're all the way in there to go ahead and pull the radiator (makes removing the bottom hose infinitely easier) and check/replace the belts.
I just wire-wheeled the outside of the turbo and cleaned it with acetone to...
I did this one about a year ago; it was surprisingly easy. I used a cherry picker to get the heads off, but not sure that was necessary. Check your freeze plugs on the heads while you have them off. I took the time to clean all the turbo components and paint them with high-temp paint and...
I recently redid all of my lines. I used standard inserts and ferrules from the hardware store, and reused the fasteners. I used nylon air brake hose from Napa for the lines. Prices ended up being fairly reasonable.
X63 on Kublos. I've used them a couple of times for parts and its been a great experience every time. Hands down the best prices I could find and ken Jr was very up front about what he was sending me. I look for reasons to take my business there despite being on the far side of the country.
Finished the rebuild on my HF54. I replaced all the soft components internally - huge thanks to Gringeltaube, without whom I literally would not have been able to do it. I was hesitant to get into it, but it turned out to be a good thing. I found several very worn/useless seals inside, and...
Lots of work on the deuce this weekend, hallelujah. I sorted out an intermittent charging spike on the 12v alt; turns out it needed a new ground. After that I finished up the axle breather tubes, then fixed the soft brakes with a good re-bleed. I also finished rebuilding the Ross H54 that's...
Only insurance is required if your within 15 days of the purchase date. I purchased mine in UT and drove it home to CA. I called the DMV ahead of time and they said I had 15days to get it registered once in the state. When I crossed the CA border I got pulled over by an LEO, he asked me "what...
