Ok, I'll try to describe something I found out about many years ago, and it
worked very well in getting the dents out of my hard top on my M54A2.
Note the dents weren't huge, maybe 4 to 5 inches in diameter.
The tool is called a slapper and it is just a piece of an old flat spring.

Yes Kenny, I can still remember pulling this back from Sacramemto with my F250,
I had bolted the lunette to the ball hitch and it rattled and jerked around so bad that
I almost lost it. The ball hitch was bent beyond repair.

Just a guess, but maybe the insulation broke down because you were
running the starter multiple times in a row before you got the new glow plugs
installed.
