best place to tune-up my 6.2

:ditto: I would strongly recommend going out and picking up the Haynes Diesel Manual. It will cover all of the 6.2 and 6.5 stuff as well as the old 5.7 and some of the Ford stuff. Long story short, you CAN set the timing yourself, but it requires the use of a diesel timing meter (either one made...

    CUCV "Must do" mods?

Check for leaks. These old trucks are known to be a bit leaky. Some leaks (differentials, transmission pan) can be shored up with a bit of RTV sealant until you replace the fluids and gaskets. Might also want to check your glow plugs. Attach a circuit tester to the end of the plug with the key...

few m1008 or 1028 ? simple help please noob to cucv

:ditto: Weight on my M1028A1 is 5,800 lbs. GVWR is 9,400 lbs. Thats closer to 2 tons. I've often thought that a M1008 or M1028 would make a perfect "farm truck." Farmer friends around here can afford newer 1-ton crew cab Cummins Dodges though. To each his own. . .

few m1008 or 1028 ? simple help please noob to cucv

Check the CUCV wiki. Just about everything you'll need to know is in there. Most of the parts can be found easily, some of the harder to find parts (alternators, starters, etc.) can be found if you now where to look or search enough, some can be replaced with other...

    Bad Starter, Again

Well in that case, definitely go through the wiring. You wouldn't believe how much trouble it can cause on these trucks. Contacts can also be a big pain in the a**. You wouldn't believe how much your voltage can go up if you clean the contacts on these trucks. A bronze bore brush from a gun...

    Bad Starter, Again

Seeing as how you may have to replace the starter anyways, I would at least have it tested when you take it out. Have you done the doghead relay mod? The stock relays are known to have issues. Also, if this is the 4th time this has happened, I would look into something being wrong with the rest...

    M1008 Lift or Level?

From what I've heard (and I know folks rolling around with 1009's on 4" lift and HMWWV 37's. Short wheelbase+big lift=crazy angles) 4 inches is about the limit. Anything more and you'll need to start looking into your driveshaft angles, shims, and all that goodness. 4" should be MORE than...

    help with frustrating oil leak

:ditto: My dad did this to trace an AC leak the other day. Said it worked pretty well. I've also heard that there is a drain valve on the fuel filter assembly for the 6.2's that drains fuel. Supposedly by the time it works its way down to the bottom of the engine it can look like oil.

    Cucv 1008

I've heard that after so many years they become the property of the sheriffs office and they can do whatever they want with them. Read somewhere the magical number was 2. I think a few guys have managed to snag HMMWV's from the sheriffs office this way. Either way, great find. I wish my truck...

    fuse block is loose

Female contacts are easy. Even easier in my opinion than male contacts. There should be a small "latch" on the female contact. Look at the contact and find out what side it is on. Then take an appropriately sized flathead screwdriver and push it in on the side with the "latch." You should be...

    All this for 1 bulb?

Beware Murphy when working on vehicles (not just MV's) Inevitably if you fix one thing, five others will break. And figure that whatever you're working on will take longer than you think.

    m1028a1 front end jump

Hey SSSC, can't figure out how to PM you. Might want to look into one of these bad boys as your SHTF/zombie apocalypse ride: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/members-rides/21049-m1007-suburban-cucv-conversion.html Its definitely mine! 8) I'm thinking with 1009 seats up front and in the 1st row (so I...

    m1028a1 front end jump

:ditto: I kept having almost exactly this same problem with a set of old tires. Funny thing was the tires looked fine, but they were so old the belts kept breaking. I found a good way to check for broken belts: Put your hand on the tread with your palm down and run it along the tire. You should...

    Friend's truck: conversion from turbo 400/NP208 too a 700r4/NP205

They shouldn't have: JB Conversions, Inc. Off Road Design has even said on their website they're going to start selling them sometime this fall.

    Friend's truck: conversion from turbo 400/NP208 too a 700r4/NP205

Ditto on previous posts. The 700R4's can withstand quite a bit, the key to making them last behind a lot of horsepower, torque, and abuse is having a good company or shop build the transmission right. I mean, just look at this: Ray Litz Granted, that guy's running a 4L60E, but really the only...

    Friend's truck: conversion from turbo 400/NP208 too a 700r4/NP205

True, but you can always double it up and add 203. JB Conversions sells a complete NP205 that they call the LoMax with a 3:1 low ratio :D

    Going to turbo the M1008

Thats something I just thought of: battery boxes/trays. Chances are you'll have to do some modification to these. Even in the article I read with the Banks kit on the M1009, they had to do this. The front battery tray was in the way of where the air filter housing went. The guys doing the...

    Going to turbo the M1008

From what I've heard you should be looking at 10-15 PSI tops during a WOT run. EGT probably needs to be a tad less. Maybe 1000 for a WOT run, sustained, figure about 900-950. Once you got your boost dialed in, tweak your fuel until you're in the right EGT range. Then again, I once read a good...
